Soho Billboard Girl's Mother Wants Abortion Ad Taken Down (Update: It's Coming Down)

SohoBillboard.jpg
The controversial pro-life billboard in Soho, which shows a young African-American girl underneath the message "the most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb," has a new opponent. The mother of the girl, Tricia Fraser, is saying that she had no idea about the ad, and that she thinks it should be taken down. Life Always, the folks behind the ad, told Fox5, "The image was properly licensed through a reputable stock image service. We'll be looking into the origin of the image and are certainly open to talking to the family directly if they have any concerns." (UPDATE: That was quick. The New York Times City Room blog reports that the billboard is being taken down because employees in the Mexican restaurant below the sign were being harassed by people angry about the message.)

Here's a video that Fox5 did with the girl's mother today:

Here's a clip from another pro-life organization that's currently being advertised on MTV and BET. It's arguably even more shocking than that billboard:

This confirms my worst feelings about the Church and the black community in this country. It has pacified black people for too long. Now it demands black women to be subservient vessels for their seed. To see black male Church ministers mimicking their Southern Evangelical counterparts and telling women they care about them, when in reality how many of them actually have done a damn thing to advance the health care and reproductive rights of the black community is just laughable and pathetic.

60% of black pregnancies in the NYC area end in abortion. That is crazy. Those women are 70% more likely to have a future premature birth.

Susana, until you and other anti-abortion activists put as much energy into providing low-income Americans with better sex education, free health care, free early childhood education, better jobs with higher wages, affordable housing, etc., as you do into controlling women's bodies, then I will continue to be awestruck by your short-sighted mean-spirited hypocrisy. Women get abortions for lots of reasons, and it is almost never taken lightly. Unfortunately, many right-wing men and women are obsessed with the act of abortion, but could give a damn about a poor child of color once it is born. At that point, all they seem to care about is getting a tax break.

Pro-life ad campaigns like those above are meant to 'bother' those who see them -- coming face to face with the truth that we as a nation are killing our children is, in fact, ugly and uncomfortable. Rather than tearing down such ads -- rather than burying our heads in the sand -- why don't we react by calling for change? Stand up for the value of those lives! For starters, call your senators and tell them to pass the amendment that will defund Planned Parenthood, which uses YOUR tax dollars to fund abortions, to aid in sex trafficking (rather than protect the underage girls who are victims) and to increase revenue specifically by increasing abortion numbers in minority areas. Don't believe it? Look into the racist goals of Margaret Sanger, on which Planned Parenthood was established. To women of color and all women, you do not have to choose death for your child. There are crisis pregnancy centers to help you have and care for your baby, or to give her a good home through adoption. These are choices that may be hard, too, but you will not regret choosing life.
