Life in Manhattan Is Nasty, Brutish and Long

The smartest, savviest, most beautiful people in the world -- residents of Manhattan, that is -- have some of the lowest rates of premature death in the United States, but are still goddamn miserable. "People in Manhattan are living longer, but not better," said Dr. Patrick Remington, who conducted a study that confirmed what every New Yorker knows in the darkness of every night, after their head hits the pillow: "city dwellers aren't enjoying their longevity because they're plagued with physical- and mental-health issues," as the Post puts it. At the very least, the island is full of pessimists, with 19 percent of people surveyed indicating they're in poor or fair health, as compared to the rest of nation's 10 percent. And we thought they were the fat and sad ones. [NYP]
