Man With Two Days Left to Live Answers Questions On Reddit

Last night, a man who said he had 51 hours left to live took users' questions on Reddit. "LucidEnding" wrote:

On Tuesday I'll finally end my battle with cancer thanks to Oregon's Death with dignity act. As part of my preparations I've ended my pain medication and am trying to regain what little dignity and clarity I can. Who I was doesn't matter. I'm in pain, I'm tired and I'm finally being granted a small shred of respect. Feel free to AMA if you're so inclined.

But why would someone with so little time left spend it answering questions on Reddit?

The post got thousands of questions and comments from credulous users around the world, ranging from long personal stories to "any regrets?" ("Yes, one. I bought my high school sweetheart an engagement ring and never gave it to her.") Q. "What's your proudest moment?" A. "Finishing my masters degree, from a hospital bed."

Not to be cynical but it does seem somewhat unlikely that someone so close to death would take to an Internet message board. However, it would also be supremely fucked up to pretend to be a dying person to fool a bunch of people on Reddit.

If you choose to believe it's real, then the emotional pull is clear, even if the voyeuristic aspect of it makes me kind of squeamish. For a lighter kind of Reddit thread, check out this four-year-old answering questions via his dad (sample Q. "Magnets, how do they work?" A. "They get paper clips to come to you.").

I followed this for a few hours on Sunday, and then again last night, and never for one minute did I think it was not real. A terminally sick man who is unable to leave his bed to even go to the bathroom, why would he not spend an hour of his last two days on line speaking to others about his decision? He got enormous support & sympathy, empathy and love from thousands across the world and also had a chance to communicate with so many different cultures. He also appears to have touched so many people in that 1 hour he was online. That to me seems like a worthwhile way to spend his last hours.

Looking for the under lined reason behind this unknown person who felt the need to broadcast this propaganda aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward their personal cause or position. On March 8, 2011, in Washington, DC, the National Journal presents a prestigious panel discussion of Living Well at the End of Life. National Journal supplies nonpartisan insight on politics and policy, which Capitol insiders turn to for credible reports on current political environment and emerging political and policy trends. Compassion & Choices rightly earned representation on the panel as the voice of people facing a terminal illness, who would be voiceless without us. My best guess is LucidEnding was just more political moves by this Compassion & Choices group for advocating a doctrine in Washington, DC

To me "in my opinion" it was a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward their personal cause or position, the systematic propagation of a doctrine of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause. It reminded me of political speaches, what I call "Nursed and Rehursted" ideologies. The mega churches in America have doctors promoting and giving sermons on the costs of end of life treatments using the dissimulation of suffering as justification for their mercy killings and euthanasia of the elderly and sick. Even the mega churches want those who can know longer make donations to be euthanized, they are a burden to their hospitals, doctors and administrative staffs. These laws are not about "Dignity" but another political move by those who have set themselves up as gods. Once I became aware of the distinction between honorary and earned doctorates I began to notice that most of the "doctors" at high profile church camp meetings, revivals, preacher's schools, and soul winning conferences were doctors in name only. Some never attended college, not to mention graduate school, and a few did not even finish high school! Furthermore, the presidents of almost all leading Fundamentalist colleges have only honorary degrees, usually given by one of their friends at another similar school or purchased on-line, but that doesn't restrain them from linking "Dr." with their name at every turn and encourage its use in their books, sermons and throughout their ministry! Our society lives in a spiritual darkness of followers who accept coercion and propaganda techniques as facts. Even Bill Clinton has a doctorate; that's right Dr. Bill Clinton.

Following LucidEnding and the thousands of unified voices on Reddit today was surprisingly moving. I think, for me, for the first time, I saw the potential of social media. A lot of emotions that were anything but cynicism from tens of thousands of strangers. Could this energy be better focused? I think that was kind of the point. One person, a stranger, dying.
