New York Times Journalists To Be Freed in Libya
The four New York Times journalists missing in Libya since Tuesday were confirmed captured by Col. Muammar Gaddafi's troops, but will be released today, according to the dictator's son, Seif Islam el-Qaddafi, in an ABC News interview with Christiane Amanpour. According to the Times, "the four had entered the rebel-controlled eastern region of Libya without visas over the Egyptian border to cover the insurrection," but being American helped because of the U.S. resistance to a no-fly zone over the country. "Then they were happy because they found out she is American, not European," Gaddafi said, presumably of Lynsey Addario, the only female among the group. "And thanks to that, she will be free tomorrow."
In addition to Addario, the four being held include photographer Tyler Hicks, Beirut beau chief Anthony Shadid and Stephen Farrell, a reporter and videographer.
"We're holding off on any comment until we're confident they are free and safe," Times executive editor Bill Keller told Yahoo's The Cutline this morning.
