Parents Do Not Find "Kid in the Overhead Compartment" Joke Funny, Not One Little Bit

Say you're a flight attendant. Say there's a kid, and his dad, and they're on your plane playing a fun little game of peek-a-boo. And so you try to help out, putting the kid in the overhead compartment, because that's what you do, put things in the overhead compartment and make sure those things fit and the compartment can close. And sometimes you move things around for a better fit, perhaps to include something about the size of a small suitcase, or a kid. And then you close it again. That's your job! You do it with a smile, because you have been well trained, and you are nothing if not a consummate professional.

Yet this training recently failed for a Virgin Blue flight attendant en route from Fiji to Sydney.

"My husband... was standing one metre behind my son when the air steward picked him up and placed him in the overhead compartment," the boy's mother told reporters. "I stood up and there were people laughing and then I said 'Get my son out of there now.'"

The 17-month-old child was in the closed compartment for about 10 seconds.

Virgin Blue has fired the attendant and offered the mom three free flights. Meanwhile, the mom says that her kid is suffering from trauma and won't leave her sight, and that she herself is too traumatized to fly again.

Via SF Gate, she said,

"I was devastated. I was absolutely devastated.

"I was crying. My husband was in shock. For days on end I was crying."

According to the Courier Mail, the woman and her husband are now estranged.

Sad. But to be honest, we're just glad this happened in a country other than the U.S. It's nice to see someone else freak out ridiculously every now and again.

"I was devastated. I was absolutely devastated."

Please, I agree that the attendant was totally wrong, but for this lady to be devastated has lawsuit written all over it.

At first, this seems like a bit of an overreaction. i.e. - maybe an apology, "I meant no harm" statement from the steward. But I would never touch another person's baby w/o permission...that's crazy.
