Asshole Pilot Landed Plane on New York Beach Because He Felt Like It

Jason Maloney (NY Post/Alex Rud)
Jason Maloney, the 24-year-old pilot who landed his small plane in Queens on Monday night, sounds like a pain in the ass. Today, the New York Times reports that Maloney chose to land his single-engine Piper Warrior on Rockaway Beach because he really likes the TV show Flying Wild Alaska, which shows "rough landings." After he went through with the dangerous landing, he told cops, "It happens in Alaska all the time." The cop responded, "Welcome to New York." Now leave, Jason, before you hurt someone.

Maloney says he had to land his plane because he had a sick passenger, but he made all sorts of other excuses to air traffic controllers (audio below) who were worried about the huge passenger planes taking off from JFK airport in the same area.

But Maloney bullshitted his way through -- and landed anyway -- but only after this series of bizarre lies:

  • He said his engine was "a little teensy bit rough."
  • He asked the air traffic controller, "Whoaaaa, what if I want to hide from you?"
  • He pronounced "Roger," like "Rodjaaaah."
  • He said, "I'm a paramedic, uh, is there anyone I can ask? Any private beaches around?"
  • He claimed he had to "drop a pastor off at JFK who is doing some medical mission work. Where would I drop him off at your airport?"

Maloney was also carrying a 21- and 22-year-old passenger, which indicates circumstantially that they were all screwed up on drugs or drink or both. For some reason, a cop doesn't think so: "He doesn't sound drunk. He doesn't sound stoned. He sounds like a jerk." Either way, he'll likely lose his license, but hear it all for yourself:

Yeah, I'm sorry but you just don't mess with ATC or the FAA. If you have no respect for the two I say go drive a boat. You're done flying.

This guy just didn't start being a jerk, this beach landing stunt is the culmination of this young mans flying career. His flippant radio style is well developed and full of clues to his character. This aircraft is a rental based out of a small field in MA which is a towered field. The company that rents this aircraft charges over $100/hr to rent this plane. The aircraft was several days gone from its home field and reported to have departed out of Republic airport. I believe that Mr Maloney has finally demonstrated to all that he has more money than brains and that his parents are bank-rolling his arrogance. I also feel that if one would look deeper into this man's past that this wouldn't be his first run in with the FAA. Usually people like Mr Maloney have problems following instructions and have a trail of violations leading up to a major event. I am thankful that he caused only minor injuries and glad that he wont be flying out of my airport anymore, and where his absence from the traffic pattern will greatly improve safety. He frequently made himself a difficult pilot for the controllers to deal with by deliberately mis-interpreting instructions and/or delaying actions to turn or extent flying maneuvers in the flying pattern. This in turn would cause other aircraft in the traffic pattern to have to re-spaced or re sequenced. I can only imaging the extra effort and stress that this young man caused the controllers and student pilots who had to operate around him. So mien Schadenfreude, "See YA"!!!!!!

This man is free to travel as he pleases. If no one gets hurt, then no wrong has been done.

That's not true when it comes to aviation. There is, by necessity, a lot of self regulation in flying. The assumption is that even when no one is looking you will do the right thing for the good of all involved. Flying can be a very dangerous activity if not done with the idea of safety and "what if" always kept in mind. This pilot was flying near some of the most tightly regulated airspace there is. Why is it regulated? So that you and zillions of other passengers can be assured that the next time you depart on that economy class airline you won't be side swiped by some guy like this heedless pilot.

you are as much of an asshole as he is!!!!

That may be true or it may not be true. Who cares. But my point still stands. This man is free to travel as are we all.

Neo, this guy consented to the laws when he started the flight. That said, you really are either really oblivious or a really bad troll.

Reminds me of a friend (no longer a friend), who, while in the middle of abusing drugs and alcohol, declared, "I don't abuse drugs; I just know how to use them better than most."

His dad was eventually arrested on charges of illegally distributing narcotics. His son (my former friend) totally screwed up his life, as expected.

I'm sorry but it was you who were misinformed but don't feel bad because most people outside the R.S. don't even know "the law" or that everyone's free to do (literally) anything that doesn't directly result in injury to another or their property. Yes, literally anything including:

"narcotics" possession/distributionDUIDWIAll Traffic Offensesand many more!

Everything changes if there are "damages" due to your actions. You can and will be prosecuted.

I COULD GIVE YOU THE SAME ADVICE. No, you needn't "follow the rules" unless you consent to them. And I'm neither stupid nor oblivious, friend. I just have a better understanding of the law than you do. Cheers.

You are either really stupid, or oblivious. There are a ton of rules and regulations that you must comply unless in an emergency. You are NOT free to fly anywhere you want to. You must follow the rules. The rules are established for the people on the ground if you can believe that. Everything pilots do revolves around not endangering persons or property on the surface. You should pick up a book, or ask someone who knows before you comment.

Funny thing about assholes, everybody has one but some folks just have to show theirs more often than most.....don't believe asshole in question will be piloting himself anywhere in US airspace in the forseable future.....methinks you may be somewhat misinformed or uneducated if you believe we are free to travel where, when, and how we may wish neopythagorean....Just my 2 cents....

I'm 20 with my Commercial license and Multi-engine rating. I worked my tail end off the get where I am and so have my peers. This jackass makes all of us young aviators look bad. Hope he winds up in a cell.

This fool gives general aviation a bad rap. Revocation, prosecution, restitution!

Hope they did a drug test. No one in his right mind would endanger passengers, individuals on the beach if any, and the damage to the aircraft being in salt water. This guy needs mental help. God I hope FAA does something!!!!

Boy his parents must be so proud. What a selfish, narcissistic, jackass. Oh, wait, his parents must have raised him to be this way. An idiot like this should have his license revoked for life. Selfish prick endangered so many and is completely oblivious. Hope local authorities and the FAA throw the book at him and charge him and his asshole parents for the emergency response bill. I sure as hell do not want to pay for that bullshit.
