Barack Obama and the Birthers: Yes, White America's Mind is Still Lost, Poll Indicates

A paltry, pathetic 38 percent. According to the latest Gallup/USA Today poll, that's the percentage of Americans who definitely believe that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

It's in this toxic environment that the White House has released a copy of Obama's long-form birth certificate.

We noted last September that "White America Has Lost Its Mind." Apparently it still hasn't found it.

Long before Donald Trump entered the national political scene — encouraging the most racist, xenophobic thoughts from the recesses of the nation's mind to come roaring to the foreground — we thought we'd seen it all. Last fall, the country was foaming at the mouth, as crazy primary voters were listening to the likes of Carl Paladino and Christine O'Donnell.

Birtherism was spreading back then, and it's clear that the infection still hasn't run its course.

The poll's good news is that while a dismal 38 percent of Americans thought before the release of the long-form birth certificate that Obama was born here, only 43 percent think Trump was "definitely" born here. Still, digging deeper into the numbers, it's scary: in the summer of 2010, 42 percent of Americans thought Obama was "definitely" born here and 29 percent thought he "probably" was, (71 percent in total). In this poll, that latter number had dropped to 56 percent (38 "definitely born" and 18 percent "probably born.")

A philosophical issue related to the question of white America having lost its mind is how one might determine whether it ever had a mind to lose in the first place.

All web sites should be required to post, at the very top of their page, what slant they articulate to the political process. Republicrat, Democran, Conservative, Grassroots, Libertarian, Tea Party, the Great Pumpkin, what ever. When your back gets slammed up against the wall for the last time, it may be necessary to come down to the level of the person, persons, Congress or Senate with whom you are having to (negotiate) deal.
