Woman Gives Birth in Cab on West 51st Street; Cabbie 'Didn't Even Mind the Mess'

It's inevitable with all the traffic in this city that once in a while, a baby's going to be born in a cab. And so it happened last night at 7:30 p.m., as Even Sweeney tried to make it from Prospect Heights to Roosevelt Hospital, giving birth in the back of a livery cab on West 51st and Seventh Avenue, "cheered on by a crowd that had gathered to watch the drama unfold," reports the New York Post. This was apparently one of the easiest births ever. Which is fortunate, because it was in a cab.

They were barely in the car when it became clear Finn was ready to make his entrance.

"I looked, and there he was," Inez Murray [Sweeney's partner] said.

Not only was the cabbie, Juan Hernandez, who drives for Arecibo, helpful (he called 9-1-1), he also didn't even charge for the ride, brought left-behind items to the hospital, and "didn't even mind the mess."

"The cleanup took a while," he said. "But that was no big deal."

Next time, we're calling Arecibo! Hopefully Hernandez got a big tip.
