Counterfeit Bag Ladies Could Go to Jail for Buying Fakes

Today in a New York Post Exclusive we learn of a new law being proposed that would terrify us to our core if we'd ever purchased any counterfeit bags. But since we haven't done much shopping at all, in fact, since that old recession, we can breathe easy -- for now. Still, it might behoove you, or someone you know, to be aware of the bill, which would mean buyers of counterfeit products could be jailed or given a fine of $1,000 if caught handing over cash for "Guchee's" on Canal Street.

Councilwoman Margaret Chin, who serves the Chinatown district and will introduce the bill Thursday, says, "We don't want to be known as the place to come to get counterfeit goods." (A bit late for that?) The Post reports...

Christine Gambino, 21, of Staten Island -- who was in Chinatown yesterday sporting a fake Louis Vuitton handbag that cost her $40 -- vowed to continue to hit the neighborhood for counterfeit goodies.

"I'll take a risk and sacrifice to look good and pay less," she said.

Erma Charles of Brooklyn said she knows it's wrong, but she can't resist.

"Everyone steals," the teacher said as she walked in Chinatown.

Okay, those two brazen women should totally go to jail, or at least have to do community service or something. But the bill would only be effective if you're caught in the act of buying the questionable bag, not if you're just carrying your Mom's Praaaada to be nice, or telling the New York Post how you and everybody steals.

We suggest a bill that would jail the manufacturers of actual legitimate "status" handbags that cost only $30 to make via the sweat of small children but cost $3,000 in stores. Those people have more money than those buying counterfeit, anyway.

Well not everyone can afford to pay $1000 for a bag that will be out of season in three months. Nor does a working parent struggling to make ends meet In these hard times. It cost $40 to make why should I have to pay $1000 and you want me to go to jail for saving my money and keeping food on my table. Go f..k yourself with that bill. And children are found to be exploited in the factories that make the real bags not just the fake. Now you figure out who the real criminal is? The one trying to look good and feed their family or the one charging 200% markup. Let's be real don't we have better things to do with our time and money then badger poor people!

I don't think the people who would buy a fake handbag are going to pony up for the real thing.

But your point about child labor is well taken.

It is sad that people still buy fake designer handbags. Not only are many of them produced by exploiting child labour, but most of them look cheap and horrible too! A lover of good handbags or handbag manufacturer/seller can always tell if the bag you have is fake, so don't think that no one notices! Counterfeit bags are horrible and it's time they were put a stop to. Invest in the real thing- they last much longer than fakes!

Who can resist the legacy of a designer label, never mind if the knock off peels in tatters the following weekend .Are you prepared to pay a $1000 fine this spring for your knock off or an extra $300 for the real thing?
