Initially reported as a 7.4 magnitude, an earthquake struck Japan this morning, leading to another tsunami alert issued for the already ravaged northeastern coast. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has a map indicating seismic activity. Tsunami wave levels are being predicted at between .5 and 2 meters high, depending on location. (Comparatively, the March 11 earthquake was a magnitude 9.0, with tsunami waves measuring in at a reported 23 meters high.) We'll update as we learn more.

Update: The AP reports that officials at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant say there's no sign of new problems after the quake. The tsunami warning does not extend to the U.S., and the quake has been downgraded to a 7.1.

Update II: We're hearing reports that the tsunami warning has been canceled. Whew.
