Murder Down, Rape Up in 2011 New York City
The latest New York City crime statistics show that while murders are down 17 percent so far this year as compared to the same period in 2010, and burglaries are down 7 percent, rape is up nearly 24 percent from 2010. Felony assaults are up 5 percent as well, though it's mostly comforting news, with crime down year-over-year and the historical numbers much more terrifying. Though 117 murders have been counted so far in 2011, and 438 reported rapes (up from 354 last year at this time), those numbers still pale in comparison to 10 years ago, when murders were up 36 percent and rapes up 18 percent from this year's stats.
