Robot to Throw Out Ceremonial First Pitch at Phillies Game

BaseWars.jpg
A robot built by two UPenn students will throw out the first pitch at today's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. Named "PhillieBot," the machine is constructed from a Segway, an extra wheel, and a robotic arm with a pneumatic cylinder. No one had the heart to tell inventors Jordan Brindza and Jamie Gewirtz that pitching machines have been around for decades, and one will have to be moved off the mound after batting practice in order to make way for PhillieBot.

The event marks Science Day at Citizens Bank Park. According to Philly.com, the day will also be celebrated by "animals visiting from the Philadelphia Zoo, an explanation of the physics of the curve ball, and exhibits about insects, fossils, and mummies."

Baseball: The only sport that needs fossils to make it more exciting.

PhillieBot is expected to throw the pitch at about a limited 30 miles per hour. Any Phillies fans planning on throwing batteries at the robot should remember that it is a robot, and batteries will just make it stronger.
