Osman Daramy, the 11-year-old charged with assaulting a female Muslim classmate, smiled and flipped off the camera yesterday at Staten Island Family Court, while handcuffed, the New York Post reports. Daramy allegedly tried to rip off the religious scarf from a young girl's head, and threatened her, asking, "Aren't you the Muslim girl we beat up? We'll beat you up again," according to prosecutors. The verbal harassment is reportedly ongoing. In a sad twist, the boy's own mother is Muslim.

Daramy is obviously troubled, having been suspended three times since January. He was caught stealing in February. In court, the boy was cuffed at the wrists and ankles.

Little Osman was born in a refugee camp is Sierra Leone and moved to the United States at sixth months old. "How could a Muslim have another hate crime against a Muslim?" his father, Frank Davies, asked. Davies said he bought a plane ticket for the boy to move back to Sierra Leone, leaving on April 17.

For now, the boy is being held without bail -- he's a "public-safety risk," according to the prosecutor -- and faces up to 18 months in juvenile detention.
