This Is How the TSA Pats Down a 6-Year-Old Girl

Updated after the jump with TSA and Congressional response.

This video of the TSA patting down and, possibly, drug-testing a 6-year-old girl has been circulating to the shock and horror of many (Drudge Report has image of the little girl with the headline "TSA STILL GROPING CHILDREN!"). Suffice it to say, we don't know the full circumstances here, and there isn't much to go on, but it does seem like a case of the letter of the law being followed to the degradation of the spirit. This is the world we live in, apparently.

[h/t to @mikeriggs]

UPDATE 1: Congress and the TSA are reviewing the incident.

UPDATE 2: Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) has introduced a new bill that would require TSA screeners to get parental consent before doing thorough pat-downs on young kids, and for a parent (or, in lieu of a parent, an airline representative) to be present during the process. This comes after this video of a 6-year-old girl getting an extensive pat-down went viral, causing the TSA to say they'd review their policies for screening young children.

You know what government and the social media consider better judgement to be....'profileíng'. To this day it amazes me that liberties are denied to the whole due to the small sect of radical daft fools, congratulations on allowing them to speard opression wich is part of the ultimate goal. The facts are that there is a "type" they know it we know it and with the way the system is set up they use it to their advatage proverbially laughing at us if not truely. Wake up people you cant have your cake and eat it too.

Where does the degradation end?  Bush was right - the 'terrorists' have won.

Anyone who watches that video and defends it is a moron.  The chances of that child being used by terrorists is so tiny its worthless to consider.  They could walk into any mall and kill people.  That video makes me want to punch someone in the face.

If I ever had to worry about being patted down by a TSA agent this would be why. If someone tried to touch me like that I would tense up and tell them just how uncomfortable I felt and tell them that they are being seen as rapists and perverts. No one has a right to touch a little girl on her groin or stick their hands anywhere close to her chest. I'm a teenager and would tell them just what I think of them.

Dear 'The Village Volice' blog,

Just because

" Drudge Report has image of the little girl with the headline "TSA STILL GROPING CHILDREN!"

"

doesn't mean YOU have to perpetuate this LIE. Unless you are particularly weak, unthinking and uncaring. Ah ...

this will all be a moot point in a few years when most people stop flying for pleasure trips and vacations and the airlines go out of business.put an armed visible Air Marshall on every flight, and get rid of the TSA to offset the cost.

The TSA is NOT groping in this video. CHANGE the inflammatory and unjustified title within 2 hours or I'll initiate action. I hope the TSA have already initiated action.

This has caused the image of USA to plummet since it was put up and if you were from my country I'd come to your office and make as much trouble for you as I could muster.

TSA employees for the most part are the grunge of federal employees. They are NOT nice. African Americans and Puerto Ricans in particular working at EWR Newark-Liberty Intl. I shudder everytime I have to travel. Plz don't respond with the foolishness of racism. It is what I observed.

I see nothing wrong with this video. It was up front, informing and explaing to the parents every move and why, in full view of evryone present. It could be pasrt of practical training for other TSA staffers present etc. How you can describe it as "disturbing" is presumptive on your part. Stop looking for the exception in everything and masking it as the norm and get on with your life and trip.

Chris

I can't help but wonder whose father just happened to be travelling with his video camera and just happened to have it ready primed when a six year old girl tripped the metal detector and some non-publicity-seeking-parent then refused to let the girl do the body scanner option?

I hate to be so dramatic but really its quite simple, when people ask how the German public could have let the holocaust happen? Well the people posting here that see nothing wrong with this TSA treatment are the same type of people that just stood back and watched while the Jews were taken away to death the camps. It is the same mentality i.e. do what the Gov has told us needs to be done and as long as its not hurting me then its ok.

Black woman patting down white child. That explains everything you need to know about why this video went viral.

I really do not have a problem with the lady who did her job very well. I seriously do not believe our biggest problem is OUT THERE with everybody else. Our problems are right here in our own nation. We are becoming puppets of the media. Our intelligence now is according to what we have viewed on the television, rather than what we read, and ponder. If anyone thinks out of the box, they are medicated for some multi-polar, or neurosis.

The truly unfunny irony here is that most of the TSA folks are black. The most oppressed group in Amerika are oppressing us all. Wow!!!

Is not Digg being highly mischievous here? Take it down. It appears to be standard procedure if the parent refuses the body scannner after an alarm and was carried out with the greatest respect by the TSA lady.

This has got to be some kind of a joke. The little girl doesn't look the least bit concerned. Likely as not, they're giving a demonstration to the rest of her classmates. What do ya bet?

The US is moving closer to a police state, where everyone does what they are told to do by anyone in a uniform. Time to cut back on the 'security' services, most of which are private companies anyway - at least if they are state controlled, you can vote them out eventually.

Mullum

America - what is wrong with you??? Are you living in a bullying police state? What if everyone just said no? Oh, yes that's right - you are all so afraid... pls remind me of what again? Come on, you are intelligent, educated people, there is no need to put up with this!

The rest of the world watches you and just shake our heads in disbelief. You don't need guns, constant war ... and all the associated "terror" accessories you seem to be so fixated with. The remainder of the western world does not behave like this.

You have bought the whole "war on terror" fear hook-line and sinker.

Asdf is right - "Al Queda are laughing their asses off right now." They won. The end.

I'm very confused by the image here and don't have enough information to come to any solid conclusion; but what prompted the thorough public pat down of a small child (in an American airport, I presume)? Despite the lack of facts, I’m disturbed by this.

Kathi

Come on Digg. Seriously? What is wrong with what this woman did? You are looking for problems and trying to start division. Stop it Digg.

Chris

Apparently, drugs are a different issue and the search would not have been for drugs, despite what a woman can be heard to say on the needlessly inflammatory, and needlessly inflammatorily and just plain untruly titled, video. Try Reading some of the comments before commenting further I suggest.

Chris

I wouldn't have thought that dangerous, unless they're being used to carry knife blades for their 'uncle'.

Chris

As part of a coordinated and thought out security policy, I'd say yes. On principle. Unless you want 6 year old girls to be used to smubble onboard box cutter blades, razor blades etc. You have to Think terrorist. Watch your language.

Chris

I'm curious as to what your definition of racism is, racist.

Chris
Chris

Have you observed the video?

Chris
Chris

The only things wrong with this video are;1. The title. The TSA is NOT ' 'Still' groping children'. I hope someone gets sued for a lot of money for those words. 2. The fact that father saw fit to refuse for the girl to be put through the body scanner when some metal on her set off the metal alarm but instead elected to film her being patted down and then post the video to somewhere where the whole world (well, everyone with access to the internet) can see his daughter being patted down. I hope he's proud of himself. The existence and needless propogation of this video is grossly insulting to the TSA and in particular to the lady (impeccably) carrying out the search. Many of the comments are amazingly arrogant and unconsidered. If I was so ignorant and unimaginative, I like to think I'd at least have the intelligence to keep quiet. Currently, despite some of the opposing comments, including yours, which offer some alleviation against the overall poor impression, I think I may not come to the USA again. There are other more congenial nations to spend my life with. I am worried about the half of the USA whose words I have seen in this blog, and I thought we were bad enough in England.

That it is happening is what is wrong. The terrorists have won.

inlerah

you're really going to campare a simple patdown to the holocaust? I really think people have to cut the parranoia and realize what happened; someone set off a scanner; this was what they do as a safty mesure.

If i had a child, and if ihad malicious pretences, i could easily hide a few knives on a child. if there are ways around security mesures, there are people who will find ways to exploit those holes.

everyone makes a big deal about "this is because we don't want to offend a few people" but At the same time you want to cause a big loophole because you are offended.

I've been trying to keep an open mind Jonw on this for over a day now but comments like Tiny Tino's (about 47 minutes before this one of mine) are not helping me maintain an open mind on what appears to be half of America.

I give thanks for the other half or I'd vow to never again set foot in your peculiar and generally unattractive country.

So so you you said said.

I don't think so OuiniThapeau. It appears her parents opted for this procedure at an airportr because they wouldn't allow her to go through the body scanner after she had triggerred off an alarm.

Chris
Chris

Correct. I wish to stand up for my inalienable right to board a plane which anyone can walk onto without a check and for which everyone knows thats the case. I mean, come on, what terrorist is going to use a 6 year old girl to carry his stuff? You'd think he'd have more imagination. Hang on ...

inlerah
inlerah

are you f***ing serious, a POLICE STATE? Im verry sorry to burst your bubble, but let me direct you to 1984. it was not a police state becayse people were worried about the security of passangers, it WAS a police state because people were spied on at all hours of the day; because the police could come and take you from your homes and take you to be reeducated! The term police state describes a state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic and political life of the population: the key word in that being REPRESSIVE! As long as you are not bringing wepons onto the plain you are not being repressed.

And, for all of you who are still being consperacy therorists about this whol thing, go look at Terry v. Ohio for full pat-down laws as layed down bt the supreme court.

Chris
Chris

I disagree. When you board a plane you want to feel fairly confident that the person sitting next to you is not going to blow it up or hold box-cutter blades to the crew etc. You do not in fact want any person to go through by default without checking. You certainly do not want anyone to know that they have a good chance of getting a person (accomplice, slave, child, what have you) through if they conform to a certain type. Please do not heap unjustified insults on the American people in addition to the criticisms of the other half which I have made. You cannot maintain security with laissez-faire. For the greater good of the majority, you have to conform on issues like this. If you don't like it, don't fly. I do not criticise the Americans in any way for tolerating this, especially in the exemplorary way it was done. More credit to the lady, the TSA, and America for that.

Chris
Chris

Yeah, loose security is better than tight security.

Chris
Chris

I totally agree. I would have thought it actionable in a civilised country.

Biff
Biff

This is ridiculous. Just goes to show how far civil liberties have eroded in this country. And yes, I realize a 6 year old can carry a knife. Someone could carry a pen made of plastic explosives too. Or a pen that turns into a knife. For that matter, someone could easily walk into a movie theater with a bomb. Should we know have pat downs and security screenings at movie theaters? The "it only takes one" argument for paranoid security measures is stupid.

Taylor Karras
Taylor Karras

Chris, the TSA may be protecting us from "terrorism" but this is about how everybody is assumed to be a "terrorist". Sure, there are metal detectors and X-Ray scans but that hasn't stopped them from profiling mostly everybody as a potential terrorist. Even after you walked through their metal detectors and their scans, they still think you're a terrorist and they'll think you're a terrorist until their hunch is proven wrong.

Hell, you say that if I don't like what the TSA is doing then I shouldn't fly. Good idea! Except for the fact that there is security everywhere. I'm guessing you haven't seen the extent of the policing that goes on. Hell even at every kind of school there's security. I shouldn't have to worry if I'm a child predator if I'm a father of a child, I shouldn't have to worry at all. I'm different and it's harder for differently able people to make it in the grand United States of America.

Just because they're making everything safe does not make it justified, if anything all this additional security is just making todays kids more paranoid and more likely to do very stupid things, and all because the kids who committed the Columbine shooting were treated badly and nothing was done about it.

In short. Sure, I'll feel safe when I board a flight but this doesn't make this excessive security in the US acceptable.

inlerah
inlerah

and, as an afterthought, there seems to be some confusion as to the cause of the "groping". The reason for the "molestation" was because she set off an alarm, not because she was six. The TSA agent probably went on to do the exact same procedure to mamy more people who wern't all white, six, and female!

WottaWorld
WottaWorld

The motivation for a terrorist to blow up half a dozen people in a movie theatre is, I suggest, less than that to bring down a plane. I'll take THAT risk.

WottaWorld
WottaWorld

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. (I seem to have morphed from 'Chris')You wouldn't train security services to assume that everyone was not a potential terrorist until proven wrong would you?

Schools. Hmm, interesting. It probably doesn't surprise anyone outside America that people, including young ones, can get hold of guns in the USA if they really want to.

Not being religious, I think this life is all I've got, so I want to hang on to this one for as long as possible.

But I admit, security doesn't generally get in the way of my daily life (I only fly say 5 times a year), especially now they don't make you take off your shoes. What irritates me is having to walk backwards and forwards 300 yards around the tape trails when there's no-one else in the queue and its only 4 yards as the crow flies to the (security) check (-in) counter! And I'd like to know how many bombs have been built into laptop computers that requires them to be separated for the X-ray machine.
