Today in El Diario: Housing Court Horror

Hope and frustration in housing court

For Maria Rosario, pursuing a case in the Bronx's housing court has become a full-time job, according to the paper.

Every day of the past week, Rosario has gone to the building at 1118 Grand Concourse to appeal a court order that would evict her from her Decatur Avenue apartment.

In the tumultuous hallways of the housing courthouse, lawyers, lawyers, property owners, and renters negotiate cases, receive bad -- and sometimes good -- news. But above all, they wait.

"Monday, they told me to come Tuesday. Then, Tuesday, they told me to come Wednesday, and here I am," she told the paper.

"This is killing me," said Margarita Bothwell, who had tears in her eyes.

Cesar Chavez's day

Barack Obama celebrated March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day, the president's press office announced. The holiday coincides with the legendary union activist's birthday.

"The story of progress in our nation is filled with difficult fights, marked by selfless acts and intrepid leaders," Obama said.

Chavez is now 84 years old. Last year was the first time Obama celebrated Cesar Chavez Day. In 2010, the president invited the activist and his family to the White House.
