Who Will Destroy America? Little Boys With Pink Toenails.

J.jpeg
Some of our nation is up in arms over a recent J.Crew ad of a little boy, Beckett, who's the son of designer Jenna Lyons. In the image, Lyons is painting Beckett's toenails hot pink, and the two are having a grand old time. Beckett is also sporting a rather Frenchy striped long-sleeved tee, and dark-framed glasses. So, Beckett is stylish, like his mom. This ad has met with shock and horror from Americans who feel that a little boy with painted toenails could destroy the world as we know it.

First there's a screed from Dr. Keith Ablow of Fox News, who says:

Yeah, well, it may be fun and games now, Jenna, but at least put some money aside for psychotherapy for the kid--and maybe a little for others who'll be affected by your "innocent" pleasure.

This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity--homogenizing males and females when the outcome of such "psychological sterilization" [my word choice] is not known.

Maybe we'll all have shiny, colored lips, though, and pierced ears and perfect eyebrows and mommies who get applause from their J. Crew friends at the park for parading their sons through the streets in costume.

Ablow continues to rant about society's slippery slope to ruin. Girls will have sex with boys, willy-nilly! They will beat each other up on YouTube! Meanwhile, boys are cultivating washboard abs and styling their hair. Which means no one's taking care of children, or creating families, or protecting America. Right?

Yet here we have a mom who is treating her little boy in quite a nurturing way, a way that, more than giving him a toy gun and letting him run around shooting it (which Ablow seems to recommend as more appropriate parenting), will likely lead to him having his own family and nurturing them as well someday. Not to mention that there is zero proof that pink toenails (or perfect eyebrows) equal a lack of willingness to support one's country.

Then there's a piece called "J.Crew Pushes Transgendered Child Propaganda," by Erin R. Brown. Brown seems to have rather liked J.Crew, until it did the unthinkable. She writes,

Not only is Beckett likely to change his favorite color as early as tomorrow, Jenna's indulgence (or encouragement) could make life hard for the boy in the future. J.CREW, known for its tasteful and modest clothing, apparently does not mind exploiting Beckett behind the façade of liberal, transgendered identity politics. One has to wonder what young boys in pink nail polish has to do with selling women's clothing.

Well...It's cute. It's different. And, we're just guessing, but we'd presume it appeals to moms who marvel worldwide over the quirky personalities of their kids. Also, Brown: Nail polish remover. Buy some.

What's especially gross about these reactions is the implication that Lyons is going to "make" her son gay, or or "gender confused" or has somehow "ruined" him. If Essie can change sexuality with a swipe of their polish, they should be charging way more a bottle. Beyond that, who cares what this little boy's sexuality is or will be? He's having a good time. He seems to have a great relationship with his mom. And we'd rather hang out with him than Dr. Keith Ablow or Erin R. Brown any day of the week, mani-pedis notwithstanding.

Confession: I played with a truck as a kid. It was awesome. I also liked to dress my brother up in an old lady wig and a floral poncho and call him Brenda. One time I babysat a little boy who more than anything wanted to be a mom when he grew up. Little kids don't give a rat's ass about gender identification -- it's adults who do. Imagine, adults afraid of pink painted toenails. It would be laughable if it wasn't so goddamn sad.

His owner wants a billion dollar  mega yacht. If we don’t stop the outflow of money from the hands of the American People to the hands of the tycoons, big oil, foreign countries and the politicians they own this depression will never end.

From what I've read here, the only one screeching hysterically is you. Are you one of those irrational conservatives? Or just a judgmental scold? And for crying out loud, it's spelled A-L-I-N-S-K-Y. You know, the guy that William F. Buckley called "very close to being an organizational genius."

I created a facebook event on a whim, because it struck me as silly that anyone was getting upset over pink toenails. Now I'm feeling the hate. Who knew that with all we're facing today, so many would take time out to make a single boy's toenail state a national issue. http://www.facebook.com/event.... if you don't think it's the end of the world for anyone to have pink toenails, please drop by. ;-)

Does Ablow know that there isn't sexually di-morphic behavior in the US? Just change your underwear and you might figure out what you are. He needs to have is license revoked and take a walk on the wild side.

The reaction is typical for Fox. I don't think it means anything but the spouse doesn't understand why she would do that to a boy. If she had used black nail polish would it be OK?

Yes even the founding fathers wore wigs and powder! Fashions change. Kids arent aware of the social significance anyway, and who cares even if they were? What's wrong with grown men wearing pink toenail polish? It's times like this that I'm glad I live in NY and not the midwestern suburbs where I grew up. In Jenna and Beckett's neighborhood no less. And where I am happy to say it is perfectly acceptable for boys and girls to do /wear /behave in whatever way they want, and I can raise my five yr old daughter not to be so clueless, sheltered, judgemental and ignorant. Thanks Jenna.

As a little girl in a very conservative household, my only entertainment options were limited to dolls, makeup and dress up. I was forced to go shopping and sit with the women at family/community gatherings. I was told my favorite colors had to pink or yellow or "something girly." But I was fascinated with boys' toys. I loved toy cars and racetracks, Nerf guns, video games, tools (I was actually quite the handiwoman) and everything else labeled "for boys only." Minus my mom, my family finally grew to accept that I was a tomboy who was not interested in stupid dolls, gossip or boys. I've grown up to be a straight woman in a successful relationship, and I love action movies, video games and the color green.

So here's my question: Why is it more acceptable for girls to be tomboys but boys can't be in tune with their feminine side?

The only outrage is that this kid is going to be tormented for years to come and probably get his ass kicked on a daily basis by classmates, His mother used him as a marketing prop and she is irresponsible to say the least.

Who the hell is saying "He's destroying America"? Nobody is! But the screeching, manipulative, dishonest, liberal hysterics out there trying to turn this into one of their "Aren't conservatives irrational?" diatribes!

Guys the Saul Alinskey shit does'nt work anymore!

I like that you're attempting a balanced viewpoint, but you're pushing me the other direction. Are we really supposed to raise children so that they pass the approval of school bullies?

Also, while we do see many children exploited so the parents can get some attention and cash, it's not fair to call her irresponsible based on this picture. I called it weird because if I saw a woman painting her son's toenails I'd assume she was really in need of attention, but again, if you're talking about protecting him from bullies, we don't do that by caving in and being afraid.

He should be able to wear a dress to school if he wants to and no one should physically assault him for it. The fact that this is all tied to marketing though makes all the difference to me. It's calculated to get attention for being controversial and it is exploitative to use a child's picture to sell a product.

Somehow I don't think the conservatives that are up in arms about this are concerned about the advertising angle. They don't realize probably that they are part of an ad campaign. Or maybe they do, but they use it to push their own agenda. Either way they aren't really concerned about the kid. They just want to make sure that gay people know enough to be ashamed and show no outward signs.

The pink nail polish is for those people. And they went right after it. I almost wrote off this article as being in effect an advertisement, and the outrage at "stupid things Conservatives write" isn't my favorite type of story, but I like the personal last paragraph, and I have to agree that getting so upset about this is ridiculous.

it's weird but who cares. all the outrage on both sides is stupid. you're helping to sell J Crew when you give this attention.

Nail polish of any color can make your penis fall off.

"A chemical commonly used to soften plastic and in lipstick, nail polish and other household items has been found to interfere with the development of healthy breast tissue, which could lead to breast cancer, according to a new study.

Butyl benzyl phthalate, or BBP, used in toys, has been linked in past studies to birth defects, kidney problems, infertility and stunted sex organ development in male babies, according to a report from French news agency AFP."

OMG!! He will be ruined! Save him from this Evil nuturing Mother right away & give the Kid a Gun & sum Crack so he can be like the rest of the Dysfunctional children in America today!

No doubt the outrage has a little to do with J. Crew being one of the First Lady's favorite clothiers. All kids paint their toenails at some point. And remember...MEN used to be the ones who wore wigs, face powder, lace and high heels!

All kids do???? Ummmmm........Bullshit!

Sheesh. He's just a kid, you morons, as far as he's concerned he's just playing with some brightly colored toy. Nail polish doesn't contain a special additive that causes your penis to fall off, it's just paint.

I'm reading this book called "Gender, Nature, and Nurture" by Richard A. Lippa, which more or less summarizes the nature and gender debate. In one of the Nurture related chapters, Lippa described how after the University of Calgary conducted a meta analysis of 172 gender studies in 1991. The researchers found that although both mothers and fathers encouraged gender-typical activities in their children, the latter was noticeably more likely to do so. Research by M.A. Tauber in the 1979 issue of the journal Child Development also indicates that fathers and mothers felt more unsettled by boys who played with girls' toys than girls who played with boys' toys. I suppose the adults fear that gender-inappropriate play by kids will destroy the existing gender order, which isn't worth preserving anyway.

Hmmm. Spending quality time with your young son by painting his toe nails hot pink does seem a tad bit odd. But J. Crew had to know it would ignite a firestorm. I wondered if it would have gotten the same response if the little boy was painting his mother's toe nails hot pink. I'm sure people would have been all over the oedipus complex thing. Little boys and girls say and do the craziest things and then they turn into adults who say and do the craziest things, so relax everybody.
