4Chan "Forever Alone" OkCupid Prank Didn't Go Exactly As Planned

Yesterday, the lonely dudes of 4chan enacted their plan to prank the lonely dudes of OkCupid. The trolls had set up fake OkCupid accounts depicting cute single women, with which they'd attempted to lure "forever alone" guys on the dating site to Times Square, where they would all collectively be stood up. The idea was to create an "involuntary flashmob" of confused nerds while the 4channers, who are really cool and socially well-adjusted people, would laugh at them.

Go-time was last night at 7:30! How did things play out?

Um, not that well. Betabeat was on the ground to observe the event, and long story short: it was really lame. From Betabeat's account, it seems like the anticipated "flashmob" of awkward online daters never really showed. They could verify only three men who fell victim to the prank, all of whom split ASAP after the reporters filled them in on 4chan's scheme.

As for the 4chan/Reddit people who came for the show, they all appear to have been -- surprise! -- real assholes.

Mr. White, who had pasted a poster of the contorted stick figure face that represents the "forever alone" meme, was arching his cellphone over his head. "There's so many fucking losers out there, you know somebody's going to fucking show up," he said.

Had they ever real-life trolled before, we asked?

"I once told my girlfriend I had AIDS," Mr. White said. "Then I broke up with her." They laughed.

It wasn't all bad. Steven Liu of Lean Startup Machine brought roses for the forever alone guys and got three girls to agree to go on dates with them.

Around 8 p.m. a cute redhead in braids approached a confused, brown haired 20-something who was BlackBerrying in the cave of one of the payphones. She spoke to him, he smiled, and they walked off awkwardly hand-in-hand. "This is the end of 'forever alone,'" Mr. Liu whispered.

And then they got married. Know Your Meme has a video interview with a member of the OkCupid faction, who maintains pretty well:
