George Steinbrenner Helped FBI With 'Terrorist Matter' Before Receiving Presidential Pardon

The late New York Yankees owner -- and basis for the Seinfeld character -- seems to have worked really hard for his presidential pardon from Ronald Reagan. According to about 800 pages of recently released FBI memos, Steinbrenner helped the agency from 1978 to 1983, including "two national security matters," one an "undercover operation" that led to a conviction. Steinbrenner even offered up Yankee Stadium for gambling raids against organized crime, though it was never used. Steinbrenner's lawyers wrote in 1988 that the wealthy owner "knows that he placed the lives of his family and himself in jeopardy through being involved in a terrorist matter," and eventually the pardon, for illegal campaign contributions, came through. Best snitch ever! [NYT]
