Geronimo, Osama Bin Laden's Code Name, Too Offensive to Even Get Native Americans Pissed

The United States military referred to the mission aimed at Osama Bin Laden as Geronimo, after the Native American leader known for his stealthiness, but Indian groups who should be pissed are more resigned to the fact that the government will just never get it. "We've been oppressed for so long, it just doesn't matter anymore," one Navajo veteran told the Associated Press about this particular instance of institutional racism. "The government does what it wants when it wants. The name calling is going to stay around forever. But when you think about it, this is an insult." Geronimo's own Fort Sill Apache Tribe chairman wrote a gentle letter to President Obama to explained the "misunderstood and misconceived historical perspectives," but did note that "to equate Geronimo or any other Native American figure with Osama bin Laden, a mass murderer and cowardly terrorist, is painful and offensive to our Tribe and to all Native Americans." Cue collective sigh. [AP]
