'NYPD Rapists' Plastered Around East Village

Though Friday evening's protest of the Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata acquittal in the NYPD rape case seemed like a moment of catharsis, it's not quite over for everyone who felt betrayed by the verdict. "People were pissed," we learned of the protest and apparently they still are: A new NYC flyer campaign is brutally blunt, with images of the disgraced officers and the plain text, "NYPD RAPISTS."

EV Grieve noted the flyers pasted along the Bowery and 2nd Avenue, including outside of the legendarily grimy Mars Bar.

The officers were found not guilty last week of raping a drunk East Village woman after a protracted trial.

DNAinfo surveyed the neighborhood about the flyers. "People should be aware, women especially, of the double standard in terms of policemen," said a 35-year East Village resident. "[The verdict] sent a big notice to all the people: The police can get away with anything."

Others were more accepting of the court's decision. "I guess the people who [put] them up hadn't heard about the verdict," emailed Moreno's lawyer about the street art.
