Reuters Photographer Captures Plane Carrying His Family Crashing -- Then Landing Safely

On a short flight from Singapore to Jakarta, Reuters photographer Beawiharta and his wife smelled something burning. Out the plane window was fire and then the electricity went off. "Will we die?" asked the photographer's oldest child. Beawiharta made peace with death quickly -- he was with his family, at least -- and then he started taking pictures: "After 20 years living as a photographer, I was thinking as a photographer." The photographs are grainy, raw, and affecting, but paired with Beawiharta's words, the story is both beautiful and arresting, especially because ultimately everyone was safe. [Reuters]
