Scientology Operation Against Washington Post Reporter Richard Leiby Exposed

RichardLeiby.jpg
Richard Leiby
After the jump, Leiby's ex-wife, Theresa Defino, responds to Marty Rathbun's allegation that she 'caved' to Scientology in its anti-Leiby efforts.

Story originally published at 12:16 pm.

Marty Rathbun has done it again. The top former Scientology figure who left the "church" in 2004 has been gradually releasing damaging information about the organization at his blog, "Moving On Up a Little Higher."

Rathbun is working with several other defectors who left in recent years, some of them with ties to Scientology's covert operations wing, the Office of Special Affairs. He's been making public OSA's "black ops" investigations of people Scientology considered enemies.

In today's case, Rathbun has released the first installment of a series that uncovers a stunning secret 2006 operation aimed at Richard Leiby, a Washington Post staff writer and editor who for years did some of the best reporting on Scientology.

According to Rathbun and the documents he has released, Scientology wanted to silence Leiby by investigating his 2005 divorce.

By targeting Leiby's estranged wife, Rathbun writes, Scientology aimed to use his "divorce proceedings as a boot to Mr. Leiby's throat."

Reached at his Washington Post office this morning, Leiby told me he could not make a comment about the matter.

Rathbun has previously posted at his blog formerly secret internal OSA documents. In this case, a 2006 document is marked "Eyes Only" and describes the steps operatives were taking to get information about Leiby and his divorce.

In approximately March of 2005 Leiby was living with Arnie Lerma as he was having marriage trouble and was kicked out of the house by his wife. He had planned to stay there for a month or two while he got things together.

Lerma is a well-known and longtime critic of Scientology who lives in D.C. and was one of the first and most important Scientology investigators who used the Internet to archive and disseminate information about the church.

The document goes on to describe Leiby getting an apartment in Rockville, Maryland, and "fighting over the equity" in the home he shared with his wife. Her place of work is described, and the ages of their children is listed.

The investigator then notes that it was impossible to collect and sift through Leiby's garbage at his apartment building, but his ex-wife's garbage was being sorted.

Then there's this interesting bit, which media critics and historians may take note of:

Leiby has been very stressed out about the divorce and per a source, he gave up his gossip column "Reliable Source" with the Post, as he could not handle it. He also has a situation with his personal finances as he has to pay for the divorce and the attorney fees, plus the house and his apartment.

I've been admirer of Leiby's work for years. Leiby worked at the Clearwater Sun before he was at the Post, in a Florida town that is Ground Zero for Scientology nuttiness. In fact, this isn't the first time Scientology was annoyed enough at Leiby to go after him.

While he was at the Clearwater Sun, Leiby wrote about one of Scientology's more notorious operations, its slandering of Clearwater mayor Gabe Cazares as it took over much of the town in the late 1970s. Years later, a former operative for Scientology's "Guardian's Office" -- the precursor to the OSA -- apologized for his role in that scummy sliming not only of Cazares, but also for plotting against Leiby himself:

I remember going to staff meetings where private eyes were sent out to find "mud" about Richard Leiby to "discredit him". Our info bureau reported that they couldn't get any dirt on Richard, so the next directive was get dirt on his girlfriend or wife, or whatever it took to silence him.

More than 20 years later, Scientology apparently was still interested in getting to Leiby through his wife.

As for what Leiby was working on at the time that seems to have alarmed Scientology so much, I found this story of his from 2005, when he reported on the nutty church and its New Mexico vault where it stores copies of the writings and speeches of L. Ron Hubbard to last thousands of years.

I talked to Rathbun this morning, asking him about the operation against Leiby. "It's the church leverage game," he told me. "You go after someone and go after them until you wear them down."

He says the next installment of documents will include more about how Scientology pressured Leiby's ex-wife. UPDATE: Rathbun called me back to clarify that he has more information about Scientology's investigation of Leiby, but not of his ex-wife.

UPDATE: Leiby's ex-wife, Theresa Defino, contacted me to say Rathbun's assessment of her was dead wrong: "I was not 'blanketed' and did not 'cave," nor did I accept assistance from anyone other than my divorce attorney. There was no 'boot' to anyone's 'throat.' As Mr. Leiby knows, I received an uncontested divorce and negotiated settlement in February 2007, which is remarkable in how generic it is. I have sole physical custody of my children with scheduled visitation, shared legal custody, child support according to state guidelines and a 50-50 property/retirement split. All of this is public record. Mr. Rathbun's telling of this saga also contains numerous other errors, as do the documents he purports to quote from. As far as the news that the 'church' went through my trash, I do not find this surprising. This is the same organization that left a headless rabbit in my backyard years ago, under my swing set so my children could find it. Note to the 'church:' I have a shredder. In addition to printing falsehoods without verification, Mr. Rathbun thoughtlessly violated my privacy to serve his own ends. Mr. Rathbun has also refused several of my attempts to discuss this matter with him."

The cult of $cientology, Rathbun... both criminal, megalomaniacal, egoistical scum.

I still think  the name, Scientology, is a misnomer. Like a drag queen, it has very few X chromosomes. It really is rocket science.

Looks like Scientology is still applying L. Ron Hubbard "tech" on "enemies," just as it did in the 1960s and 1970s.

Thank you, Ms. Defino, for highlighting how Mar-tay operates. He pretends to be all about free speech but has zero tolerance for anyone that does not blindly support him or his agenda. He is truly seems every bit the monster that he makes Miscavige out to be. I have no idea if any of his claims about Miscavige are true but there is definitely a lot of pot and kettle action going on between those two. As someone that, perhaps unfortunately, considers themself a Scientologist of sorts, I have as little interest in supporting the Church of Martology as I do the Church of Miscavigary. And Marty attempts to hijack the concept of "Independent" as thoroughly as Miscavige hijacks that of "Scientologist". Finally, I am amazed that a so-called journalist such as Mr. Ortega would be so naive as to consider something written on a blog as "the documents he has released". Mr. Ortega, FYI, a blog post by Marty Rathbun is not an OSA document. It is a purported transcription of an OSA document by a known liar with an agenda. Close enough, I guess, for another person with an apparent agenda.

Maybe Marty Rathbun can supply you with all the other info he personally knows concerning the fair gaming of Richard Leiby, Arnie Lerma and the Washington Post during the days when Scientology was suing them, since Marty was right in there with the church in orchestrating that fiasco. A fiasco that ended with the church walking away with it's tail between it's legs.

From wikipedia we find:"The Washington Post, et al. were released from the suit when USDJ Leonie Brinkema ruled in a memorandum on November 28, 1995:

"When the RTC first approached the Court with its ex parte request for the seizure warrant and temporary restraining order, the dispute was presented as a straight-forward one under copyright and trade secret law. However, the Court is now convinced that the primary motivation of RTC in suing Lerma, DGS and The Post is to stifle criticism of Scientology in general and to harass its critics. As the increasingly vitriolic rhetoric of its briefs and oral argument now demonstrates, the RTC appears far more concerned about criticism of Scientology than vindication of its secrets."(Memorandum Opinion of November 28, 1995, by U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema; Religious Technology Center v. Arnaldo Lerma, Washington Post, Mark Fisher, and Richard Leiby)The Memorandum Opinion acknowledges what Scientology practices to this day: the "Fair Game" policy, a written directive by L. Ron Hubbard that encourages harassment of anyone who speaks out against the church. In conclusion, the court awarded RTC the statutory minimum of $2,500 for five instances of non-willful copyright violation." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A...

In 1979 we moved from LA to Florida, near Clearwater. At the time Richard Tinney was the City Commissioner in Clearwater, trying to run for Mayor. I was asked by the "Church" of Scientology's Office of Special Affairs to help. He had a program, "Save Sparkling Clearwater, Stamp out Scientology". Milt Wolfe told me: "Tory, We came here on a lie". (Long story re Hubbard set up--all "top secret" of course). "So WE cannot handle this. We did lie", and R. Leiby was the main reported on all of this, so they (C of S/OSA) Hated him.

I went and talked to many people, and the result was RT was voted out. I escaped out of Scientology, after 30 years "in", in July of 2000. Thank you to Tony Ortega who has continuously exposed this insidious organization, the phony "church" of Scientology.

I have no doubt that the Church did this. However, Mr. Ortega, you need to be careful of your sources. Just because Marty Rathbun re-typed something does not mean it's an actual Church document. Be a journalist here -- demand to see the original and at least verify its existence before treating it as fact.

I know this will make me sound pro-Scientology; I'm not. But I worry that you're so quick to take Marty's word for everything. Remember, Marty was DM's right-hand-man and he's still a firm believer in Scientology. He's just playing out revenge fantasies against David Miscavige, but the truth is that the two of them come from the same mold. He is just as willing to lie to forward his version of Scientology. At the end of the day, they're both trying to make money by selling suckers a piece of blue sky.

Wow, as an ex-scientologist, I no idea this stuff was happening. Some of the posters above look suspiciously like a scientology plant. I think all of my scientology friends need to take a good look at what is happening here. I didn't know what I was getting into with scientology. The more I read on the internet, the more I realise just what a bad decision I made joining scientology.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, BidsJump.com

For those who might be following this, I have attempted to set the record straight on Marty Rathbun's blog. After printing two of my comments, one which was just a reprint of my statement here, he accused me of defending the church and not contacting him. Neither are true. Then he signed off with "good luck," "you've been heard," and has refused to allow any more comments by me.

Tony Ortega, you are a man of integrity, fearless and honesty. Thank you for being there and communicating with truth. These Churchies are doped and so brainwashed that it is even hard for them to spot the right target of all their trouble, David Miscavige, so instead they attack you (wrong target). They are not only destroying Scientology but also LRH's reputation in the world. Shame on them. David Micavige is a CRIMINAL and a well-known PIMP for his best friend Tom Cruise.

Ladies and gentlemen good evening, you've seen that seeing is believing. This article is now yet another bettlefield between the "Church" of Scientology's Office of Special Affairs, which is basically their inquisition, and Anonymous, the infamous leaderless collective sworn to the dismantlement of their cult. The scietologists (OSA) will cry "bigot! liar! hater!" at the author and all those who disagree with them. Members of Anonymous will make fun of them and give you links to websites full of facts and figures proving what they claim. There are only maybe 2 or 3 OSA in this thread, but they're using lots of different names to give the impression that they have more support than they actually do. This is a long-standing, rather pathetic tactic. Anonymous is Legion, for they are many. Ant they, as you can see, are kicking arse.I comment the author on a well-written article.

Have a pleasant day,

Tony Ortega is an excellent journalist. We do not know what Marty showed Ortega in the way of documentation. It's best to not presume he just went by a blog article. Ortega also provided an update here after he was contacted by Ms. Defino. Marty is the one you should reserve your criticism for, as he provided the original information to Ortega.

"Be a journalist here -- demand to see the original and at least verify its existence before treating it as fact."

Actually Tony, the more widespread you make these documents of Marty's, the sooner the truth will come out whether they are real or not ... because if they're fakes, the Church will sue in a heartbeat. And if they don't sue, we have much stronger evidence that they're real.

"He's just playing out revenge fantasies against David Miscavige..."

That sounds like an OSA line.

Scientology operatives would often over-state the effectiveness of their operations to their superiors. Rathbun was one of those superiors. That might be why you and he have different versions of the truth - his version might be colored by the tendency of cult operatives to lie to look good for their boss?

Your response to Tony Ortega made him look bad in front of his followers. He couldn't ignore it entirely so he went to his fallback method of short, dismissive replies that don't answer any of the substance of your comment.

I did see the interchange Theresa and, it didn't surprise me in the least. I'll also agree with those who are aghast to see Tony Ortega, whose coverage of Scientology over the past decades has been so invaluable, accept Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder as 'reliable sources' for information. There is no doubt that both Rathbun and Rinder are operating on an agenda that directly opposes the exposure of any of the 'Church' of Scientology's true criminal history *or* current criminal activity.

@JJ wrote: "That sounds like an OSA line."@6fff0ebaca2ea201fd4838b1d4083df1:disqus That's a pretty stupid thing to say. Not every critic of scientology thinks well of Marty Rathbun. Despite his recent helping members to leave the cult, some believe, myself included, that Marty has been willfully holding back in taking responsibility for his own devious fairgame actions against critics and 'perceived enemies' of scientology while he was a scientology staff member and executive. This is because he wants to 'keep scientology working' while the critics want the cult closed down. The thing people forget is that Marty is and will always be an intregal part of the historical fabric that has made this cult what it is today. He tries to ignore that fact but those exs who have survived fair game and those who have been around the internet long enough know the history that precedes his exit.

I love Tony Ortega and his work in exposing scientology, done long before Mark Rathbun started speaking up. So, I think it correct to ask him to question what must be questioned and ask for documents to verify what is being said. It's very easy to just supply a scanned copy of the purported documents that contain these things which Ms. Defino takes issue with in regards to statements made about her. Any journalist should require seeing them than take the word of an ex critic smasher who finds it easier to be the pot calling the kettle black.

Who can blame Ms. Defino for trying to defend herself and her private matters in this? Where is the original document? Marty NEVER supplies then. Who in their right mind accepts a typed copy?. Anyone can make anything up. Especially when it concerns these people - who endured fair game over many years and survived with integrity to keep their relations intact, despite a divorce and despite Scientology. How dare Marty accuse her of folding at the cult's pressure and refusing to communicate with her and not provide documentation.

Ms. Defino's comments here, while rightfully pointing the finger at Marty's false information and accusations about her, take nothing away from the fact that scientology is a dangerous and devious cult and that Marty Rathbun was once a dangerous and devious member who has yet to figure out what side of the fence he's on. Tony Ortega may not know this but he should.

Hey Joe "zinjifar" Lynn, if Marty posted something that contained lies against Miscavige or his cult ... don't you think the cult's lawyers would be ALL OVER that? Of course they would. Not sure what your beef is with Marty's documenting the cult's abuse ... but I suspect it has something to do with your rabid anti-ANYTHING Hubbard ... even if some people find some of it useful after leaving the cult. That anti-anything-hubbard thinking, by the way, is also thought-stopping and cultish.

Theresa Defino
Theresa Defino

Not sure I agree with your interpretation here. You didn't see my comments to Rathbun beyond what he allowed to post because he's censoring me. His characterization of me isn't based on any documents, according to him, but "sources." Your anger should be at the `church' and Rathbun. Tony had the decency to keep me out of his post, tho linking to Rathbun made that somewhat pointless. However, since Rathbun refused to contact me and I had no way of getting to him, I went to Tony. Tony did nothing wrong and printed my response. But every story you see needs to make clear that the real victim in all this is me and my kids. I played no role in anything Leiby ever wrote on Scientology and they played no role in my divorce. And their document made me out to be some kind of tool (and miscast him as well). All the ex-Scientologists I've ever met can be as rabid as the people they claim to abhor. Rathbun further victimized me. I can't tell what camp you're in.

>So you'd rather have Marty keep his inside stash to himself?

No, JJ, but I would rather have Marty produce real documentation, like the flyers he scans or the PDF of Fairman's SP declare. All this other stuff could have originated from Marty's word processor. The fact that it actually happened does NOT prove these so-called "docs" are legit. It's no surprise that Marty knows about the program; Mike Rinder probably helped run it. For all we know, Mike filled him in on the details and Marty wrote a memo to help things along. The Church won't sue because the action will be exposed.

Start thinking for yourself, JJ, and stop letting Marty and LRH do your thinking for you!

JustCallMeMary
JustCallMeMary

@ JJ - What stash? This information Marty wrote about is from 2005-2007 - Marty was no longer in the church by that time. He received this information from someone else, probably Mike Rinder who was still in and running the OSA at the time. And why did Marty fair game Mrs Leiby by posting personal details about her marriage and some things that she states are just not true? And if Marty really feels like this document he claims to have is real, then all would be fine if  he'd just produce an actual document as opposed to the usual typed rendition he always supplies on his blog, as if he does not know what a scanner is.

You are wrong about Marty doing "more to expose the church of scientology's abusiveness than anyone else"  You think because all you know is Marty that all there is to know comes from what he writes. You need to take your head out of the sand and take a trip down memory lane on the internet, which contains 15+ years of people writing up their experiences resulting in hundreds if not thousands of horror stories of abuse beyond Miscavige's physical assaults - stories Marty does not like to discuss because they show the tech and policy of scientology to be tools of a cult. But they are on the internet and Marty cannot erase them, nor the truth and the efforts of people like Arnie Lerma and Richard Leiby who made scientology known for what it really is. Visit all the web sites and pages listed at the link below and read what is written and then try to tell me that Mark Rathbun is all that you currently think he is.http://www.forum.exscn.net/sho...

JJ

So you'd rather have Marty keep his inside stash to himself?  You condemn him because he was "part of the historical fabric", yet his speaking out -- as the former #2 -- has done more to expose the Church of Scientology's abusiveness than anyone else in the last decade+?

You're funny Mary.  My guess is that if Marty didn't still find usefulness in some parts of Hubbard's philosophy, you'd be singing his praises.  Your words smack of extremism ... of the anti-anything-hubbard variety.

@6fff0ebaca2ea201fd4838b1d4083df1:disqus If you look around this post there are a few cases of Theresa indicating that Marty won't post her replies on his blog. He also didn't respond in any way of substance to her posts that he did allow.

Now his gang are claiming she is OSA, which is fairly common on his blog when comments are allowed that disagree with Marty's line.I stand by what I said. Nothing to do with ideology.

Sorry SFF, I read Marty's and Tony's articles regularly. I saw nothing in Theresa's responses here that Marty hadn't already published. Accusing him of trying not to "look bad" doesn't seem to be supported by the facts. And by the way, I do think Marty erred in not blocking out Theresa's name ... but he also posted Theresa's response letting her defend herself and refute his own views.

So thank you, Tony, for helping to expose the cult's corruption and abusiveness, and not getting into a war of ideologies.

"Who told you that Marty and/or Mike are cooperating with the FBI?"

The "New Yorker" article on Haggis told the world about the FBI's working with "several [recent] former members" ... the St. Pete Times futher confirmed it ... and if you remember, Marty broke the story on Haggis (which if he hadn't, the New Yorker would never have contacted Haggis, and we likely would never have learned about the FBI investigation), Marty also broke the story on John Brousseau (who worked for Miscavige/Cruise and provided firsthand evidence of Miscavige's and Cruise's inurement), and many many other witnesses and pieces of evidence that the FBI no doubt is using to build their case.

Marty also supported the Headley's case against the CoS with an affidavit.

Disagree with Marty and Mike all you want, but thinking that they are secretly conspiring with the CoS (and apparently all these other former members) to "fake a reformation" is ludicrous, imo.

Not if the Marty Rathbun/Mike Rinder show was itself a false-flag operation by the 'Church' JJ. One intended to allow a charade 'reformation' that would short circuit prosecution of not only the 'Church', but Marty and Mike themselves for their history of criminality.

If you mean me, I'm not sure what 'camp' I'd fit in to. I'm glad Tony allowed you to correct false allegations, but, what I see him doing *wrong* is accepting Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder as reliable sources for a news article in the first place. The current 'story' is entirely based on a purported document furnished by Marty Rathbun and claiming to be a 'leaked' Operational report by the 'Church' of Scientology's 'Office of Special Affairs'. This is about the fourth such 'document' released by Rathbun on his own blog, but, none of them have any provenance or substantiation.

There's also no explanation of how many *other* such documents are in Rathbun's 'possession' and why they're being released at an opportunistic trickle, rather than all together. There's also no reason to assume that any documents he does furnish are'nt opportunistically edited to *minimize* the criminal nature of Scientology's operations.
