Teacher Mocks Muslim Student After Osama Bin Laden's Death, Says 'I Bet You're Grieving'
We're pretty sure this is the most ridiculously small-minded and offensive incident to come out of the death of Osama bin Laden so far: Talking Points Memo reports that a high school algebra teacher at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas, allegedly told a 9th grade American-born Muslim girl in his class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday, following it with "I heard about your uncle's death."
The student, of course, understood that he meant Osama bin Laden and started crying. The teacher asked why, and upon being answered by another student that it was because of his earlier comments, apparently laughed. According to a parent, "And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away."
The teacher has now been placed on administrative leave and the school district has issued the following statement:
In the Clear Creek Independent School District, we believe diversity strengthens our community and seek opportunities to celebrate the different cultures within our schools and neighborhoods. The sentiments allegedly shared by this teacher are not reflective of the staff at Clear Brook High School or anyone within the Clear Creek Independent School District.In accordance with CCISD policy, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a personnel investigation. The student did the right thing and immediately notified an adult regarding the teachers' comments. The principal at Clear Brook High School notified the child's parents and has been in communication with the family.
We'd be ashamed at kids doing this sort of thing. When it's teachers, it's just plain disgusting.
