Teacher Mocks Muslim Student After Osama Bin Laden's Death, Says 'I Bet You're Grieving'

clear-brook-highschool-cropped-proto-custom_2.jpg
We're pretty sure this is the most ridiculously small-minded and offensive incident to come out of the death of Osama bin Laden so far: Talking Points Memo reports that a high school algebra teacher at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas, allegedly told a 9th grade American-born Muslim girl in his class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday, following it with "I heard about your uncle's death."

The student, of course, understood that he meant Osama bin Laden and started crying. The teacher asked why, and upon being answered by another student that it was because of his earlier comments, apparently laughed. According to a parent, "And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away."

The teacher has now been placed on administrative leave and the school district has issued the following statement:

In the Clear Creek Independent School District, we believe diversity strengthens our community and seek opportunities to celebrate the different cultures within our schools and neighborhoods. The sentiments allegedly shared by this teacher are not reflective of the staff at Clear Brook High School or anyone within the Clear Creek Independent School District.

In accordance with CCISD policy, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a personnel investigation. The student did the right thing and immediately notified an adult regarding the teachers' comments. The principal at Clear Brook High School notified the child's parents and has been in communication with the family.

We'd be ashamed at kids doing this sort of thing. When it's teachers, it's just plain disgusting.

Here's video from ABC 13.

I live in Texas and I'm not suprised by this kind of ignorant crap from a teacher. It pretty well sums up the mindset of many people here.

I hate to be the bad one here, but I go to clear brook. This girl isn't even muslim. Also, te "mother" who raised such a fuss was the girls friends mom, not her own mother. This family is also notorious for wanting attention. The teacher did not have the right to say that, but often teachers just joke around to try to level with teenagers. That's not the most conventional approach, but I as well as many students and teachers from my school think this was blown way out of proportion.

Many teachers in the US are NOT educated-good people.Watch them closely and you´ll see who´s who.

All persons licensed to teach children in most of the nation's public schools, are required to take courses in child psychology or adolescent psychology. In doing so, they would know that such blatant sarcasm if not lost on a child, will, at least be, taken as a vicious attack, irregardless of the child's belief system. These are not adults, and linguistically, have difficulty processing this sort of verbage. Knowing that, it can only be concluded that the verbal attack was deliberate malice.

What a jerk. Aside from bigotry and gross insulting insensitivity, this displays emotional immaturity and a lack of professionalism so deep and broad that the man should lose his job immediately.

LOL at conservatives defending the teacher. You people are un-American barbarians. Since you can't actually act out your hatred and rage, you take it on the most defenseless people possible, including a 14 year old girl. .

So now Islam is a race? Really? If not, and of course it isn't, then no racial profiling took place. Can liberals really find nothing better to do than policing the speech of everyone else? Not everyone shares the liberal admiration of that "peaceful" religion, Islam. Liberals should absolutely ask the adherents of Bahai how peaceful and tolerant Muslims are, in countries with a Muslim majority.

Why is this teacher being protected? Release his name so any future employer who googles him knows who he is.

I have a word all American Muslims should quickly learn and apply: cope!!

Cope with what life brings much as the rest of humanity.

I fail to see an issue in the teacher's comment worthy of a news article. This young person may have actually displayed some sadness at OBL passing which was observed by the teacher.

Remember how some in the Islamic countries danced in the streets after 9/11 and most of the media decried it as barbaric and just about every other kind of derogatory description? If we describe their celebrating what they see as a victory as "wrong", then how do we describe OUR victory under those same rules? I do not think OBL was a good person, and I am most certainly not defending him in any way, shape, or form, but our behavior is a reflection of our character as well.

This is newsworthy because it forces us to stop and think about our overly "patriotic" and celebratory response to the news of bin Laden's death. We need to recognize the ongoing effects of 9/11 on race relations in our country and that one guy's death can't make that all go away.

Basicjohn, the other 29 kids in the class probably learned that their teacher is a jerk, if not that day then when the teacher was put on administrative leave.

Punishment worthy and news worthy are hardly the same thing.

When I saw this headline, I thought to myself, "I'll bet this happened in Texas." Good guess, huh?

@Kaitlin Bainever heard of something called microagression?  it is when you are systematically marginalized by comments that intend or doesn't intend to oppress and discriminate against you. This is fueled by how society perceives power and privilege and who is acceptable identity and who is not.

Many people think it's blown out of proportion because they don't understand how offensive this is. Seriously, you're saying the teacher tried to "level" with a Muslim teenager by joking that her uncle is Osama bin Laden. F that guy.

Let's ask the Native Americans how peaceful Christians are. The Jews, Gypsies, Israelites, Homosexuals, Blacks, ....

Apparently Jewish is a race now, why can't Islam be one? (looool btw)

Lay off Fox news and Budweiser, son.

Although nobody mentioned racial profiling (good attempt at that, though), it could actually be argued that racial profiling took place here. It is likely that the girl appeared to be Afghani or Pakistani or Arab, etc., and that's why she was singled out. A lot of Islamophobia is targeted at people who simply look like they're the right race to be Muslim, so it does have an element of racism to it. That becomes obvious when you see people like Lebanese Christians being attacked as Muslims, because people looked at them, saw their race, and assumed.

Who said anything about racial profiling? Or raised the idea of Islam as a religion of peace? What...what the hell are you talking about?

that's a very ignorant statement! why would a teacher "assume" some American high schooler is related to bin Laden? just because they share the same religion?! duh. 1 of every 5 people in the world is muslim, 1.5 billion people in the world... so what reason would he have to think she is related to him??

Bob Dole
Bob Dole

Yes, and the teacher knew from DNA tests that the student was actually Bin Laden's niece.

You're a genius.

Stupidrabbit

I bet you're giving out this "advice" without ever having to cope with harassment, with being threatened, without having to fear for your life because of the color of your skin or your faith.

It's easy to tell other people to "cope" with the ugliness of bigotry when you yourself are watching from the sidelines, if not an active participant in causing their pain.

Maybe rather than telling those who have been discriminated to simply accept it, maybe YOU should grow a brain and stop spreading the hate and ignorance that makes this world such an awful place.

Todd - the "dancing palestinians" after 9/11 was a scam story. The top news source in Germany, Der Spiegel (and others after them) had a story about it... someone was there handing candy/cake out & encouraging the kids/people there to cheer. The photos were cropped & excluded all the people walking nearby, going about their business as usual. Search at whatreallyhappened (dot) com for more info

This is one of the worst analogies I've come across in awhile. In order for your analogy to be logically consistent, it requires the belief that the murder of 3,000 imperfect, but relatively innocent people is morally equivalent to the murder of the one man that oversaw the murder of those 3,000 people. You presume, without justification, that we are using the "same rules".

Vincent Crummles

Some of the other kids probably thought it was funny and hold similarly moronic views as that teacher. Bullying in school is bad enough without teachers doing it. This is more newsworthy than Lindsay Lohan's latest hijinks.

If I look at you for a few seconds I can say pretty horrible things to offend you too. Let's see how you can handle it

corrective_unconscious

Not if the offensive comment is directed at you. In that case, it would be common understanding, not newsworthy.

The issue, as you well know despite your "pretending" to be ignorant, is racially and ethnically tinged abuse from an authority member of a person in a minority.

No wonder you're so dismissive of the matter.

In Florida, recently. A Greek-Orthodox priest was attacked by a former military man because he appeared to be a Muslim.

I'm guessing dark skin, robe, funny hate, and beard so he automatically became a Muslim in his eyes.

Osama did way worse to his own people than he ever did to the US. Throwing acid on girls going to school in Pakistan? 9/11 doesn't hold a candle to it. And we've done pretty awful things in the "middle east," too...(middle east is in quotes because Pakistan is in South Asia and Afghanistan in Central Asia, not that anyone cares about splitting hairs when it comes to "ragheads")

Kateisabamf
Kateisabamf

In pursuit of this one man, who allegedly oversaw these 3,500 deaths on September 11th, we somehow managed to find ourselves in Iraq. Not going after the dude who supposedly orchestrated 9/11 but to take down Saddam for "weapons of mass destruction." We spent how many years terrifying Iraqi children and abusing civilians then covering it up. In Iraq we murdered over 100,000 CIVILIANS. Innocent civilians. Finally, in 2010 -- 9 years later we pack up and head over to where the guy behind 9/11 is supposed to be at. And God knows how many innocent civilians have died in Afghanistan since the occupation began in 2010.

And just for lulz:“I don’t know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don’t care. It’s not that important. It’s not our priority.” G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

K Mcminn

Drone attacks and counter-terrorism measures have now killed more civilians in the Middle East than were killed in the WTC attacks. So, really, by celebrating the end result, we're also celebrating the means to that end. But I guess it's easier to forget thousands of civilians being killed when they're not American, right?

What gets me is all the news stories around the world from many years back stating that bin Laden was dead way back then. We know he was very ill back before 911, & was on dialysis back then. just how long can someone with kidney failure & on dialysis live? there are links to some of those stories at whatreallyhappened dot com

Don't split hairs, even the Courts recognize the line between race and religion or race and national origin can be so intertwined at times as to be indistinguishable. I am betting this child was not white.

Kateisabamf

No, you're just unaware period. This isn't about 9th grade algebra. This is about a teacher that made a very ignorant and prejudice comment to a student.

And to HTH: You're a complete dumb ass. Quit making up words and using this as an in for your idiotic political digs. "Religophobe"? Really? If you want to get real here, then this is clear Islamophobia -- something your righties are all guilty of.

HTH

"Muslim" is not a race. Saying "Islam is horrible, backwards, and disgusting" does not make one a racist; it makes one a religophobe... which is a character trait of all leftists.

basicjohn

You're probably unaware of the importance of anything you were taught in the 9th grade, you ignorant ass.

But are you aware of the importance of teaching kids racism? I worry about the lesson the other 29 or so students took home that day. Our taxes pay teachers to set an example.
