Anthony Weiner Headlines Skip Weinergate Dick Puns on the Front Page

The Most Mature Paper in Town
More than a week into the Anthony Weiner scandal, the shit hit the fan, but our local New York newspapers were already running on empty if this morning's front pages are any indication. Last week brought us New York Post gems like "Battle of the Bulge," "Weiner Exposed" and "Hard Time!" But after the big blow yesterday, this morning's results are relatively subdued, and the restraint actually serves the New York papers well, lending the tiniest bit of gravity to the situation. "Naked Truth" from the Post and the competing "Yeah, I'm a Schmuck" from the Daily News maintain the papers' edge without being too juvenile. AM New York opts for the more frank "'Dumb,'" using the congressman's own word, while Newsday mirror the Post with "The Naked Truth," but chose a better photograph. The Times, typically staid, says "Tearful Weiner Admits Sending Explicit Picture." The real fun is for inside!

The meat of papers and on their websites are where they let loose, like the Post's "The dork knight" headline, calling
"Weiner a 'caped crusader' in sext chats." The serious op-ed that calls for Weiner's resignation is called "Erections Have Consequences."

And yet! The "Weiner's wiener" jokes somehow stay mostly in last week. Or with the amateurs. (The Post's page two "Weiner Bawls" is pure professionalism.)

Well, imagine that!  Weiner lied. No, really? Duh!  The only reason this moron is admitting it is because he knew Breitbart had the goods on him.  Don't let anyone be fooled - he is one of the most arrogant jerks in politics today (and there's plenty of them) and he wouldn't have admitted this for ANYTHING. If his constituents allow him to stay in and not resign then they are just as bad as he is - accepting a man without morals and principles!  The man is disgusting!  And what is wrong with the young women communicating with him? He is A PIG! Yuk, gag me!  Don't people get it?  If he does this, what other low life, under-the-table crap does he do?  For goodness sake people, demand character in the people that represent us - unfortunately we haven't had character in a leader for quite some time now!  Get America back to the great country it was - the country that everyone in the world looked up to.  Don't let this kind of garbage go unpunished.

By your standards half the founding fathers would have been out on their asses. The Declaration of Independence was written largely by an adulterous miscegenationist whose relationship with a slave would today be prosecuted as rape; you wouldn't want a man like that to set pen to parchment to create our nation, would you? or to become the country's third president? You wouldn't want a serial adulterer with more than a dozen illegitimate children to control the postal service or play a critical role in gathering foreign support for the US in its struggle against the British, would you?

The country that the world looked up to, to the extent that it existed, was always controlled by white guys with massively inflated senses of privilege and serious, untreated boundary issues.

Standards of acceptance change. What was acceptable 235 years ago is far different than what is acceptable today........ except lying.

That having been said, this is not a simple case of a child getting caught being nasty and making up a quick on the spot fib that Mom sees right through. This guy is a fully grown adult. A 46 year old Congressman and a straight up liar. A self admitted, premeditated, public official on TV, willing to sacrifice anyone to save his a**, repeted liar.

He is as gone as a July snow.

I'm also thinkin' maybe Thomas Jefferson wouldn't have made it quite as far as he did had he tweeted a full color photo of his peenie-wiggle to floor of the Continental Congress.

OK, I'll bite once more. You're spot on about our disagreement on definitions..... but then I still believe...... that oral sex is.......well..... sex.

No, I don't believe Anthony preplanned getting caught, who on earth would intentionally plan that?

As respects other premeditations, why, yes I am advancing that notion. Whatever could have tipped you off to that? Perhaps the 10 days of intentionally called (Weiner showed up for them, yes?) press conferences? Anthony slipped when he Tweeted as opposed to sending a direct message to Meagan Broussard. Upon this realization, he quickly calls his staff and directs them to meet at a public house where a damage control plan is devised and implemented. Within this plan is the strategy to deny the act, cast blame upon and discredit Andrew Breitbart as a hacker and aggressively start a campaign to discredit anyone (through the immediate dispatching of Private Investigators) to whom he had sexted with. By his own admission, he planned to stick with and persue that tangled web of deliberate lies forever if possible, which is exactly what he did, until the situation became so bleek he had no choice but to cash in his chips. If that isn't premeditation, I guess I don't know what is. What would you call it..... shooting from the hip?

Do YOU really believe had damning evidence not been so strong, Anthony would have come clean on his own? Of course you don't, but then again, you really can't see the real issue here..... afterall, in your opinion, everyone does it, so what the hey anyway??

Wake up.... just a little bit. Your horse has three broken legs and hasn't drawn breath for a couple of days, yet there you still sit, on top, whippin' it to keep going. It's over.

As far as you leaving me to educate myself on situational ethics...... thank you.

Bergers and Weiners ... that's actually pretty funny.

He may well resign. As for situational ethics and premeditation--well, I do not think those words mean what you think they mean. Are you seriously advancing the notion that Weiner planned in advance to issue bumbling and increasingly implausible denials in the event he got caught being naughty online? I'll leave you to educate yourself about situational ethics on your own.

Well, Weldone, we're gonna disagree on this one. Maybe you've been on the grill a little too long..... there's alot of singed cats out there..... guess you're one of them. . Weiner dosen't have to resign, he just should. It's not just about the sexting, it's mostly about the straight up lying. The premeditated, deliberate and publically executed 10 day plan to purposefully throw innocent others under the bus just to preserve himself. The problem here is you can't see that. Situational ethics have won you over, you believe it's justfied, normal.... you accept it, actually, you condon it. Seems your basis of right vs wrong was never heightened any further than the simple concept of legal vs illegal. Probably not your fault, most folks raised without any real sense of honor generally smell kinda fishy. My prediction...... Weiner is gone by the end of the month. Bergers & Weiners.... Peas & Pods. TcG out.

Oh right, every politician who authors a public lie is tossed out of office. Every politician who commits a crime or breach of public morals resigns upon exposure. John Ensign resigned immediately when he was revealed to have bribed a former staffer to stay quiet about Ensign's adulterous affair with the staffer's wife ... oh wait, he stayed in office until on the verge of indictment. David Vitter resigned immediately upon being revealed as a frequenter of prostitutes, not staying in office until ... oh, wait, he's still in office. Larry Craig resigned immediately upon having been convicted of lewd conduct for soliciting bathroom sex ... oh, that's right, he finished his term.

Yes, standards change, in this instance from month to month and depending upon one's political persuasion. If Weiner broke any laws, he should resign--even though that isn't actually the standard to which other elected officials commonly adhere, and it isn't, for good reason, required by the rules of Congress. But that hasn't been established.

Politicians lie. They lie to get elected, they lie to stay in office, they lie to get support for legislation that they know won't do what they say it will, they lie to get and maintain public support for bullshit wars. They routinely lie, to the public and to each other, and about each other, and about stuff a lot more serious than accidentally broadcasting penis pics. Toss out every politician who lies and there won't be any elected officials until we go to robot ones.

And tell me: would you applaud Jefferson having been hounded out of public life for his sins? or Franklin? or any of the other progenitors of this country who no doubt lied about personal lives that would have been scandalous back then if publicly revealed? This resurgence of sexual prudery and the insistence that elected officials be less than human in their private lives and more than noble in their public ones goes hand in hand with suspicion of science, suspicion of liberal arts educations, and the mythologizing of American history as demonstrated by Sarah Palin just the other day. It's stupid and destructive. We're headed back to the days of excommunicated scientists and citizens in stocks. Maybe you're in favor of that. If so, see you in the public square. We'll all bring our stones.
