New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is prepared to announce a September 13 special election to fill Anthony Weiner's seat in the House of Representatives, but won't do so until the extended legislation session in Albany ends, reports Andrew Siff of WNBC-TV. Also on that day is the New York state primary for local elections, though there won't be a primary to decide candidates to replace Rep. Weiner; they will instead be picked by local party chairmen, Politico reports. Names being floated now for the Democrats include Councilmembers Melinda Katz and Eric Gioia, and Republicans like the Weiner-defeated Robert Turner and Councilman Eric Ulrich. Due to lines in the process of being redrawn, Weiner's district could disappear altogether by the next proper election. [Politico]
