Artists Make Potholes Pretty

Two photographers have turned at least two of New York City's potholes into bona fide works of art. In the world of married couple Claudia Ficca and Davide Luciano, a pothole is no longer simply a menace that jolts you face first into the Taxi TV when you're riding in a cab. Instead it is Alice's rabbit hole or a big bowl of spaghetti and meatballs.

The artists explain on their website that "a sudden collision with a canyon sized crater of a pothole" set off their project.

"Our imaginative and diverse application for potholes led us on a relentless quest in search of the perfect pothole," they write. They do this, mind you, in the middle of traffic.

Ficca and Luciano have also created pothole scenes in Montreal, Toronto and Los Angeles, but they came to the right place in New York where potholes are kind of a big deal. Lest we forget the Department of Transportation's pothole Tumblr, which makes filling in potholes look like the work of superheroes.
