Delta Upholding the Banning of Jews, Religious Items From Flights to Saudi Arabia?

Plane.jpg
American Jews, Israelis and anyone with religious paraphernalia may be kept off Delta flights traveling to Saudi Arabia from the United States under the rules of a new Delta SkyTeam partnership, USA Today reports. (UPDATE: USA Today has pulled their report entirely, making it possible that this was just a huge rumor. See below.) Delta's deal with Saudi Arabian Airlines, announced in January, requires the American company to align with Saudi Arabia's "strict Islamic law," which says that anyone with an Israeli passport stamp be kept out, while every visitor requires a visa and a sponsor; all women must have a male sponsor. Bibles, crosses and any other "non-Islamic article of faith" can be confiscated. Delta maintains that it "does not discriminate, nor do we condone discrimination against any protected class of passenger in regards to age, race, nationality, religion, or gender," but won't really be more specific.

Religious groups are not having it.

"Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally, should be strongly condemned for its despicable discrimination against Jews," said a spokesperson for the American Jewish Committee, which is based in New York. "For an American company, our nation's values should trump narrow business interests. Delta should be the first to reject Saudi airlines as a SkyTeam member."

Update: The article on USA Today's website has been deleted. In its place is this message:

CLARIFICATION: An early version of this story contained incomplete information and has been removed.

Which isn't very clarifying at all! The newspaper points toward its religion blog, which notes, "Jewish leader Rabbi Irwin Kula was wary about inflaming concerns on this, saying he knows many professionals who are very open about their Jewish religious identity who fly to Saudi Arabia all the time for business."

In our comment section, a Delta representative writes:

Hello, this is Susan E. with Delta Air Lines. I'd first like to make it clear that Delta and our global workforce do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion or gender. We would never create a policy that promoted discrimination. As a global airline, we provide transportation to a diverse group customers from countries throughout the world. We do so directly and through partnerships (we do not currently offer service into Saudi Arabia ourselves). Along with this, these countries have various laws and visa requirements that we must follow. Oh my goodness your writers are blindingly stupid.  Delta has no flights to Saudi.  None.

If you don't like Saudi Arabian (SV) airlines' policy, just don't fly them. Vote with your money and not with your ideologies. SV will eventually change their policies once they realize they want to compete globally without gov't subsidies. So, here's my analogy and food for thought to offend all three religions: don't eat pork in front of strict observant Jews, don't drink alcohol in company of Muslims, and don't dangle a circumcised penis at Christians!

Hi, this is Susan Elliott with Delta. Just want toprovide an update because we see there is some confusion about our relationshipwith Saudi Arabian Airlines. We do not operate service to Saudi Arabia and donot codeshare with any airline that serves that country.

Delta’s only agreement with Saudi Arabian Airlinesis a standard industry agreement, which allows passengers to book tickets onmultiple carriers, similar to the agreements other US legacy carriers have withSaudi Arabian Airlines.

All of the three global airline alliances – Star, which includes United Airlines; oneworld, which includes American Airlines, andSkyTeam, which includes Delta – have members that fly to Saudi Arabia and aresubject to that country’s rules governing entry.

While Israel gets a pass for its ethnic cleansing, land grabs, check point humiliation, house demolitions and wholesale siege against non Jewish Arabs. Talk of crass hypocrisy.

Sasboy, you would be right at home in Syria, Iran, or Saudia Arabia.  That is where scumbags live, and where you belong as a close member of that group.

Doesn't this say it all about the "misunderstood Muslims"? All free nations should start deporting back to their 4 th century countries . When in Gods name are people going to wake to this sleeping demon? I also find it very interesting that American Hews still continue to indoctrinate with social liberalism. Are you crazy ? Christians and Jews have to stick together. Too late for Europe.

Hey, you really need to update this story. The USA Today story it's based on has been retracted, because it contained false information. I think the whole thing is one big false rumor.

This story appears to be total bullshit. USA Today has retracted the story from its site, with the following note: "An early version of this story contained incomplete information and has been removed."

As far as I can tell, USA Today originally picked up the story form birther-friendly website World Net Daily -- that bastion of accurate journalism that pushed the "Barack Obama Was Born in Kenya" story for years (see: http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=314....

Delta Airlines will no longer get my business.  For the management of Delta to even consider these inflamatory descriminatory practices, much less adopt them generates nothing but contempt and disgust from me.

We'll need to take closer look at those dual-citizenship passports Israelis carry. In one part they are American citizens....in the other they are Israelis. Americans get along with Saudi...Israelis don't.

Well maybe we should ban all Saudi Arabians from U.S. flights. It seems like when 19 of them get together, it can cause quite a problem...

A few years ago there was a successful divestment movement against race segregated South Africa by many colleges and universities.   I imagine that Delta would have been one of the divested companies had it followed the apartheid guidelines in order to do business there.

Now, I'm not sure these institutions will take the same approach against Delta or Saudi Arabia, but it's long past due.  I say this knowing how the anti-Semitic department of one major university was recently disbanded for ideological reasons, and Saudi Arabian interests have made large educational grants to others. One can only hope.

I know Delta can't change Saudi Arabian policy.  But there's a conflict here between Saudi sensibilities and American ones, and I don't see how that kind of discrimination can be enforced on flights that begin in the US.  I don't know if it's illegal, but it ought to be.

So maybe there just shouldn't be direct flights between our two countries under the circumstances.

Delta is having a good week. First one of their employees urinates on a passenger's luggage and now this.  If airlines continue to run their business as they did in the last couple of weeks they will be lucky to be around next year. The airline industry needs to learn how to run a service based business. Drive the passengers away and you have no business. I just read that the airline industry ranked worst of all industries. Beyond the endless fees, in the last week we heard that airlines did not do proper drug testing, kicked people off for cloth they wore and for being disabled, did not check that employees are legal aliens and tortured us with system crashes. I found a great site to your travel adventures at airlineslodgingetc.com
