The office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was the victim of a shooting in Tucson this winter that killed six and injured 13, has released new photos of the congresswoman on her Facebook page. Apart from her cropped haircut, she seems almost unchanged; there are few visible signs that she took a bullet in the head only five months ago. Giffords poses outside on the lawn of her Houston hospital. In one, she smiles directly into the camera, and in the other she's with her mother, Gloria Giffords.

According to Giffords's spokeswoman, Pia Carusone, she will be released from the hospital sometime this month or next. But the congresswoman is not back to her old self yet. In an interview with the Arizona Republic on Thursday, Carusone said, "She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she's still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing. Add it all together, and she's able to express the basics of what she wants or needs. But, when it comes to a bigger and more complex thought that requires words, that's where she's had the trouble." It's going to take a lot of rehabilitation to get Giffords back to how she was, pre-shooting, if indeed that's possible. For now, it's just a relief to see Giffords looking happy and healthy; what an incredibly inspiring lady.

Note that these pictures were taken *before* the recent surgery to repair the hole in her skull that was left open to allow for temporary swelling and pressure. I wonder if the hole is under the skin at her left temple, where there's an apparent depression. Anyway, once that surgery heals, she ought to look even better. Obvs that's not her main concern, but I have to think it might be more of a challenge to self-motivate to work on cognitive rehab and to get out there in public, if she were also significantly disfigured.
