Elderly designer Gerald Abramovitz, 82, died Thursday from injuries he suffered after being mugged May 25 on the Upper West Side. The scumbag who did this to Abramovitz is still at large.

Born in South Africa, Abramovitz was trained there and at the Royal College of Art in London. Well-known as a furniture designer, his Cantilever desk lamp of aluminum and steel rests in MOMA's permanent collection.

Abramovitz had dropped by the apartment of a friend near West 89th and Central Park West and had rung the buzzer in the vestibule when he was hit on the back of the head by the cowardly mugger, who grabbed his wallet and ran. He was hospitalized for two days and released, but then collapsed and was readmitted to the hospital. Cops haven't determined whether it's an official homicide.

At the time of the attack, Abramovitz was still working on design ideas. From the Wall Street Journal:

"He was a very dynamic, creative, charming person," said a friend, Gene Koretz, a retired journalist. "He had the exuberance of an 18-year-old, and he was still designing."

Koretz, whom Abramovitz was trying to visit, found his friend bleeding on the floor of the vestibule, the Daily News reported at the time.

Tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit tips at nypdcrimestoppers.com or text info to 274637 (CRIMES), entering TIP577.
