Grant Cardone, NatGeo's 'Turnaround King': Doing Scientology's Dirty Work?

Categories: Scientology

TurnaroundKing.jpg
We happened to catch last night's premiere of Turnaround King on the National Geographic Channel. Well, OK, we were tipped that it might be worth paying attention to, so we did. I mean, normally, we are not watching reality TV on the NatGeo channel on Sunday nights.

Starring a man named Grant Cardone, this was more or less a straight rip-off of Kitchen Nightmares, and if you're familiar with chef Gordon Ramsay's show, then you know the formula: Cardone learns how badly a small business is doing, then fights to get the owner to use basic business sense to get things going in the right direction. (Last night's first two episodes involved a Gold's Gym in New Jersey and a car dealership.)

Cardone is charismatic, smart, articulate, and really seems to know what he's talking about. It's a fun show. So we were intrigued to learn what the show didn't tell us: that Cardone is a high-level wealthy Scientologist who, four years ago, may have slimed a fellow top Scientologist at the bidding of Scientology's dictator-for-life.

This afternoon, Marty Rathbun, once one of Scientology's top executives before his 2004 departure, made public at his blog a dramatic set of e-mails that Cardone sent out to fellow Scientologists in 2007.

Rathbun notes that Cardone is a wealthy Scientologist who has reached the highest level of "Operating Thetan" training, OT VIII, and is known in the church for his generosity to the cause, giving $1 million to a "Superpower Project" and another $1 million to Scientology leader David Miscavige's "war fund."

Cardone is so eager to please Miscavige, Rathbun says, he was willing to do some of the church leader's dirty work.

Rathbun says he knows this because before he left Scientology, Rathbun himself was originally asked by Miscavige to perform an unpleasant task: go after longtime Scientologist and famous acting coach Milton Katselas for not being loyal enough to the new Miscavige regime and way of doing things.

In a phone call, Rathbun explained to me how punishing Katselas is a prime example of how Scientology, under Miscavige, has lost its way. Over his decades as one of Hollywood's best-known acting coaches at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, Katselas had helped bring into Scientology some of its biggest celebrities, actors like John Travolta, who first encountered Scientology by studying with the famous teacher.

But gradually, Katselas had been having less to do with Scientology as Miscavige increased pressures on members to give money, and as he began to drive away many high-level members in what author Janet Reitman has called a "mass exodus."

Rathbun says Miscavige wanted Katselas punished for not being more active, even though, over the years, he had been so effective at bringing in some of Scientology's greatest celebrity prizes.

That task, Rathbun says, fell to an eager, gung-ho Scientologist that Miscavige could count on. Namely, Grant Cardone.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2007, Cardone sent out an e-mail about Katselas that went out to hundreds of Scientologists, one ex-member tells me. (Rathbun produced a copy of the e-mail on his blog, but the Voice was able to get its own copy independently, as well as copies of e-mails from the Scientology community discussing Cardone's accusations.)

In the e-mail, Cardone accused Katselas of no longer participating in Scientology events, and not contributing money to Miscavige's push for new buildings:

milton katselas does not attend or participate in any direct hard-sell dissemination projects to grow our church and make others aware of our efforts.

milton katselas has not made any direct contributions to Ideal Orgs, IAS or any other of COB's command intention.

milton katselas does not demonstrate being any part of the team of Scientologist who are doing what they can to make a difference.

The e-mail also accused Katselas of various sexual advances and practices with his female students, of paying female students to touch him sexually, and asking other students to perform sex acts in front of him. The e-mail provided no evidence for any of these accusations.

In other words, it appeared to be a simple smear attempt, intended to ruin Katselas' reputation in his own religion.

The message ended, "Please forward this to others that will benefit from this knowledge as it is true. Sincerely, Grant Cardone"

Rathbun says that almost immediately, Scientology's executives realized that this was a disastrous way to treat one of the organization's most loyal and most well-known members.

The next day, May 16, 2007, Cardone sent out a new e-mail. "Immediately destroy all forms of the e-mail I sent you," he wrote.

Rathbun notes that a little more than a year later, Katselas died of heart failure.

I called Cardone's office today, and was given the name and e-mail address of his assistant, Jen Harris. I sent a detailed message about what Rathbun planned to publish today. I am still waiting for a response.

Grant Cardone this, and Grant Cardone that... How many best selling books have you written? How many companies have you helped get through this tough economy? For that matter, how many WRITTEN goals do you have and have you achieved? How do you make the world a better place? By condemning the success of others?? Gimme a break! Let me know when you decide to put the remote down, quit wasting time watching TV, and take responsibility for your own challenges, work through them and make your life and the lives of those around you more fulfilling!!

Hey that's really a great post and a wonderful description out here, I really like the way things are being executed and discussed here.

Looks like you're engaged in a little smear campaign yourself.  Why does the show have to report his religion to the viewers?  And I've never seen an article so loaded with hearsay in my life.  I'm not a Scientologist and as far as I'm concerned its no crazier than Mormon's magical underwear or Christian's paranormal beliefs.  I came across the show by accident and its if-it's-not-broke-don't-fix-it-format and I found it very enjoyable and even *gasp* inspiring.

You guys are all idiots...and I mean that in the most affectionate sense...if MR says something remotely negative about Scientology it is taken as the gospel truth...but anything he says that validates the Tech, then he is b**sh*t crazy!  Now this Cardone fellow comes along has the good fortune of getting his own TV show and he is attacked for some emails he made in 2004!  And if any of you "idiots" had even one scintilla-amount of knowledge or contact regarding Kastelas, would know that he did not give a damn about what anyone thought of him, be it DM, MR, LRH or Cardone!

Jen Hammon also studied at the Beverly Hills Playhouse under Katselasshe was TC's assistant..She was married to Tommy Cruise's  lacky driver Josh Harris at Grant Cardones swanky Hollywood pad...in 2009

you won't find one reference of MIlton  Katselas on any Scientology web site not even a fitting eulogy seems Miscavige has done to Milton what he does to all the diminutive dwarf does to all SP's

you would think MIlton Katselas would be revered by the cult..instead he is completely ignored not even a foot note.

Milton Katselas indoctrinated Jenna Elfman, Kelly Preston, Giovanni and Marisa Ribisi, Erika Christensen (from the TV show Parenthood), Jennifer Aspen, Denice Duff, (both from Y&TR), and Nancy Cartwright. The Pasadena Playhouse should be investigated.

Does National Geographic know it's being used as a pawn in David Miscavige's plans for world donation via sneaky infiltration?

I understand the uproar from the Scientology Antics but I've known of Grant since 1990 and he trained thousands of sales people in every  business. Never did or has any religion come.  The show was great! The message it sends is even greater!

It still surprises me how these Scientologist celebrities keep popping up. I had never heard of this character until reading this, and he sounds like a typical shill and more. But it's so weird that these famous folks don't distance themselves from a group that's been shown to be so abusive and geared toward profit. Do they not realize the atrocities (e.g., the scheme involving Paulette Cooper) this group is capable of? (Surely this guy has Internet access.) Or do they just go to the Celebrity Center feeling mysteriously above it all and ignore the realities?

Thanks, Tony, for another interesting article.

Jen Harris used to be Tom Cruise's assistant. Makes sense. I wouldn't trust Grant Cardone as far as I could throw a tennis ball.  Now that makes sense. Dirty is as dirty does.

Read about what he's done to several people in business.  Duplicity is his middle name. And he's plugging himself as a financial coach?  Can you spell  Manipulator?

Gives me the creeps. National Geographic, please don't let us down. Do your homework.  Lotsa subscriptions will be going bye bye with that slimy turkey.

They say Scientology's color of money is juts like anybody else's?  NOPE... it's red.  They're serial soul killers.  And now Miscavige and Cardone mafia bosses have bought their way to try to pretend to tell people what to do?!   NO WAY IN HELL!!! or heaven!  BOOOO GRANT CARDONE you are a LOSER FAKE PHONY BROWN NOSIN NO-TALENT LOSER who is trying to be "important".   P. I bet someone with a thinking brain almost had heart-failure when they eventually realized what Grant Cardone had done by attacking Milton Katselas like that.

"Put the word on the street that you’re writing about Milton Katselas, and every student he has ever had will want to tell you about the best acting teacher in the world"The Actualizer July 15, 2007, Mark Oppenheimer, New York Timeshttp://www.nytimes.com/2007/07...

I can't believe the sleaze ball Grant Cardone (mafia name!!) pulled the wool over National Geographic's eyes.  He tried to ruin the great acting coach Milton Katselas by spamming people with rumors as a defamation campaign for the Church of Scientology!  He looks greasy too, have you seen the trailers? What a hypocrite.

Tony, I would like you to know that Jen Harris is also known as Jennifer Hammon (or Jen Hammon) who used to work for Tom Cruise as his assistant for years. She used to be an actor and a Porn star before she became a Scientologists and also started working for Tom Cruise. While being Mr. Cruise's assistant, she was physically hit very hard against the wall several times by Mr. Cruise for a very minor error.   She is married Cruise's driver, Mr. Harris.  Later in 2005 Cruise kicked many of his staff, including Jen Hammon (Harris) and his sister Liane (Cruise's publicist) out.   David Miscavige made sure Jen stays in the "circle" so she got hired by Grant Cardone because David Miscavige and Tom Cruise were afraid that Jen and her husband (Harris) may leak some of Tom Cruise's secrets out to media and public Scientologists.

Jen Harris (Hammon) is directly controlled by David Miscavige.  I doubt if you ever hear back from her.

Grant Cardone was wrapped up in the "woo woo" running a scam called the "mankind project"Cardone claims he warned James Aurthur "Death" Ray not to do his sweat lodge scam.James A Ray is on trial for manslaughter in Arizona

Cardone wrote an article in the Huffington post about it. It was an attempt by Cardone to distance himself from Ray.James A Ray aldeegly became acquainted with Cardone thorough Scientology, and he modeled his deadly sweat lodge ceremony after Cardones program.

Cardone was involved with the bizarre-O  Mankind Project in So Cal...aka the New Warrior Project

theres plenty online about Cardone involvement  running the wacky Mankind Project and his association with JA "Death Ray"

Well "not a scientologist", no one cares about Cardone's 'beliefs', many care very much that  Miscavige and co. bullied and harassed the old man until his death.  Seriously, the Mafia looks like boy scouts compared to the thugs that comprise this so-called "religion".

TonyOrtega

Actually Mike, Katselas was very concerned about Cardone's e-mail, as we established in our follow-up piece, which you can see here: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/...  Also, Cardone's e-mails were sent in 2007, not 2004

Roger Friedman for Fox News in April 2008 interview with Jason Beghe on the subject of Katselas: "He gets kickbacks," Beghe says. Among Katselas' students have been...------------------Katselas is dead. He's unable to produce for the cult. He's thrown under the bus like Mary Sue and Quentin. The only one who gets revered is Hubbard. When Miscavige croaks they'll pretend he didn't exist either. It's PR strategy. Gets the max dupes hooked on the scam. Worked quite well, before the Internet.

The cult/DM did not want it widely known that Katselas got kickbacks for funneling his students into CC, and I'm sure Katselas didn't want it known either, and that's one of the reasons he didn't become more vocal about things. He just stood his ground and didn't fork over millions to the cult.

Katselas saw it as a win/win situation, and for most of his experience and life, it was.

I read the comments on Marty's blog about Cardone. They want it both ways: They are claiming Cardone is out-ethics by not giving all the glory of his multimillion dollar success (he runs 3 multimillion dollar companies) to what he learned from LRH, and yet they are saying he doesn't operate according to LRH principles, and he's under control of DM.

All adoration, all the glory, must go to Hubbard. Blessed be his holy chain smoking.

The cult can't celebrate some, likable, positive dead person like Yvonne Jentsch either, who probably had a tiny fraction of the skeletons in her closet compared to Hubbard himself.

Yvonne died of some terrible disease. She didn't die to go on and do important exterior research like Hubbard.

Jenna got in through Bodhi, who is from a Scientology family. Kelly through John - who had nothing to do with Milton. The Ribisis are a Scn family, as are the Christensens. Aspen was brought in by her husband, David O'Donnell - who grew up in Scn. Cartwright was in long before she ever studied with Milton. And it's the Beverly Hills Playhouse. Other than that - you got it.

Do now.  What about those businesses?  Any Scientologists?

It's easy to find businessess that are doing 8 out of 10 things wrong and about to close and then improve it.  Short term.   Con men won't be showing you how it's going 3 or 5 years down the road.

Whatever sales technique or sales pointers Cordone had prior to scientology, it's obvious he is now mixing in scientology's management/business insanity in there.  On the website details of one episode,  you'll see terms like "battleplan", a sci term.  Everything eventually winds up in "war mode" in scientology.  No, really.  My take on that is Hubbard's multiple personalities just couldn't get along and the in-fighting escalated in concert with the drugs/medicines clash, and aging.

Statistical management "tech" of Hubbard's  will flatline this business in short order (if they even stick with it).  Creeping right behind stat mgmt is scientology's ethics (their version) tech and that's when full blown attack war breaks out, enemies behind every door, paranoia strikes deep.

These two businesses, the car dealership and the Gold's gym, should contact their local Chamber of Commerce who will lay out links to all kinds of free help, information, and networks.  I'd suggest their first step is a PR campaign:  "Not a Scientology Business!"

Grant Was the CEO of Freedom Motorsports you might remember the failed effort to get the Dianetics Sponsored Car on the NASCAR circuit..with a Scientology brainwashed driver Kenton Gray and Scientology celebrity money backing it..Nancy Cartwright,Gretta Van Sustern and Tom Cruise dumped money into that Bridge Publications  fail...

I used to work at Earthlink.  When I worked there, the scientologists that still worked there were mainly in the sales department.  And it makes prefect sense.  The sales dept was pretty unethical from my perspective and sold people stuff they didn't need to get their commission.  I actually helped people get rid of products they were sold and didn't need.

That is the kind of sales training I would assume Grant Cardone does....the extra sleazy kind.

Scientology fabricates celebrities, like a virus.  Scientology is synonymous with Weasel.  They weasel and manipulate, thinking they are superior because they "know" about the mind.

The Scientology Corp.  uses money to buy into things for their plan to dominate the world.  If only they actually practiced what they claim to live by, their would not be thousands and thousands of outraged people.

This guy Grant Cardone is no celebrity. By his own admission in a letter he mass distributed in 2007, a character assassination on revered acting coach Milton Katselas, Cardone admits he is "no artist."   Got that right!  Grant Cardone is a parasite. And MONEY does not make a celebrity, unlike the Scientology Corporation would have us believe.

He looks like a greasy used car salesman.

Maybe they did there research and found out there was nothing there.  Just like the Judge that dismissed both Headley cases, the dis-banded German Commision that investigated Scientology for 14 years (and found nothing) and the EU High Court that overturned a Russian Court's decision regading Scientology.  The world does not operate like anonymous internet forums --- it operates on tangible data not hearsay and rumour.

True, Scientology "celebrities" are like everything else, their creed, human rights and all the other things the Corporation pretends to support and says "See? Hey ...to GRANT CARDONE, OT 8, million dollar controbutor to David Miscavige's Real Estate Empire of Scientology --   nowhere in this show does he credit his "techniques" to Source, that would be L. Ron Hubbard.    That's a big no-no per "Church" rules.

Other practices?  Or just plain sneaky?

Mike, the Headley cases weren't dismissed for lack of evidence, but because the judge thought (wrongly, in my opinion) that even if the church of scientology commits human trafficking, the courts shouldn't look into it.

Of course, the judge neglected to apply the appeal court decision in Wollersheim v Church of Scientology 212 Cal.App.3d 872, 260 Cal.Rptr. 331 (2d Dist. 1989). You should read it. It's fascinating. Or read Tony's report on the case and the related litigation. Fascinating. Facts!

I get it. But it's not unusual that Scientologist actors are drawn to a Scientologist teacher. If there was a Hasidic Jewish acting teacher and all the Hasidim generally studied with him, it doesn't mean that guy is a proselytizer, but just that you're drawn to people you know share your viewpoint on life. I studied at the BHP for three years back when Milton was alive, and I never heard a word out of his mouth advocating for his religion. But I did hear plenty of gossip about how the Scientologists were unhappy that he wasn't Scientological ENOUGH. The guy couldn't win - was attacked from both sides. But he was a very astute teacher.

Amen, brother!  Sounds like all that's left are the parasites, psychopaths, narcissists and professional victims (I don't feel sorry for this group.  They are a/k/a Enablers).

Greed is Good became Greed Is Good as long as I'm getting a piece of the Pie and now is Greed is Bad because they stole my Pie.  Scientology is a relgion, no it's a cult, actually it's a business.  See the Sales Manager, Al Capone, if you got any problemz with that.

MarkStark
MarkStark

Scientology is a sales and PR monster that will eat anything in its path to grow. Lawyers like Moxon will sacrifice their children or anything to keep scientology selling.

What did Quentin's (Hubbard's son) suicide mean to Hubbard, when Quentin died at 22? It was an embarrassment and distraction.

People like Grant Cardone are Scientology's brightest hope. People who can sell anything and teach others to sell anything.

Study tech, obliteration of psychiatry disguised as human rights,  Dianutty, sauna/vitamin cure for addiction...all very thin stuff, shaky ground. But if you can SELL it, and motivate others to SELL it, then that is all that matters to the cult.

Katselas had a creative, individual way of using Scientology, but the "true for you" aspect of it did not jive with the hard core "clear the planet" sellers of Scientology and what they expected of him. It wasn't enough for them that he was regarded as one of the best acting teachers, produced the core of celebrity scientology single handed.

They wanted and expected MONEY and his direct sign of devotion. They knew how much he was worth. They wanted him to dump some money, show up at an event, stagger under the weight of his Platinum Meritorious Platypus trophy, show the other high rollers his devotion. They want the kind of devotion Cardone showed. The willingness to ruin the life of someone else, in order to "put ethics" into them.

I don't feel sorry for Katselas. He beat the cult at its own game. He used it for power, money, and connections.

Selling and wealth creation is the new religion. What is in opposition? Environmentalism, for one thing. The concept that you can lead a happy life, using less energy, and without a million dollars.

Sarahj
Sarahj

There's only 2 things of importance in Scientology:  Money, and well funded Lawyers to protect the money scam.  Coincidink:  Sales and Legal are the Only two areas Hubbard didn't claim to be the genius Source of.  That's right.  When it's really important to Get Your Product,  Scientology makes sure not to use any scientology "superior tech"!

Since Money is Worshipped in the Cult of Greed, superior Salesmen are Gods in Scientology.  However you grab the cash is a-ok.  Coercion, blackmail, threats of family, business, social relationship destruction, you know, the usual spiritual experience.  Those with actual sales techniques are  revered, showered with special lapel pins, and golden, gaudy trophies, and even "pink leg" status (inside sci joke).

The reason scientology is shrinking like a wet witch is Miscavige seems to have bought into the con himself:  believes he is above the law,  justice can be bought for the right price.  Well, okay, in the U.S. where it's headquartered, let's be honest: that Has been true.  Has is the correct tense.  The sci leader/dictactor has been writing his own laws and that will be his downfall.  Hope he remembers to Stand Tall in the courtroom (lol).
