Jan Eastgate, Scientology Official, Arrested in Australia for Covering Up Sexual Abuse Claims

Jan Eastgate, clearing the planet of civil rights, one little girl at a time
In our post-illness haze, we're just getting around to a big Scientology story that came out of Australia earlier this week.

Jan Eastgate is president of one of Scientology's more annoying front groups, the Citizen's Commission on Human Rights. The CCHR occasionally fools local politicians into thinking it really cares about something besides proliferating Scientology. It does so by telling people that its primary interest is the human rights of everyone.

Well, the CCHR may have a harder time with that line now that its leader has been arrested for trampling all over the civil rights of a little girl who was the victim of sexual abuse.

Eastgate was charged with "perverting the course of justice" after it came out that back in 1985, she had coached a little girl, Carmen Rainer, and Rainer's mother, to lie about sexual abuse of the girl by her stepfather, Robert Kerr. Both parents were Scientologists.

Last year, Rainer, now grown up, made public her claims about the abuse and cover-up on the national Australian television program, LateLine. "The Church got involved and they sent Jan Eastgate over to drill me and tell me what to say to the police, and what to say to docs," Rainer told the program. "Just say no. Don't say yes, because otherwise you will be taken away from your parents and you'll never see your family again," Rainer said about Eastgate's coaching.

What may be even more embarrassing for Scientology is that just three years after this incident, in 1988, Eastgate was awarded with the church's highest honor, its Freedom Medal. (Travolta got the award in 1991, Cruise in 1995.)

Eastgate is also known to Scientology watchers for telling a stunned John Sweeney of the BBC that evil psychiatry was actually behind the Holocaust (see her at about the 3:55 mark):

Well, naturally, the most surprising element of this story is that the Australian government is actually doing something about Scientology's uninterrupted record of unethical underhandedness and perversion of justice.

What a breath of fresh air.

Psychiatry has often abused people itself. While many religions themselves have their problems, Scientology is facing criticism because they often challenge psychiatry, which itself is a powerful institution. Foster children have been disproportionately "pathologized" as being "mentally ill". The foster "care" system has perverse incentives to label and pathologize people, because doctors get kickbacks for drugging people(read former New England Journal of Medicine editor Marcia Angell's "The Truth About Drug Companies" and also look at www.gwenolsen.com). Many other people who are often less politically powerful have often been targeted by psychiatry for labeling. Psychiatric drugs have debilitating effects and are used more to control people than to help them. "Mental illnesses" are also "diagnosed" in more subjective manners than in physical medicine. Many religions have their problems, including the Catholic Church, and the Catholic Church has been connected with sexual abuse scandals. But Scientology has stood against abuses perpetrated by psychiatry, so I think it attracts more heat. Although I am not a Scientologist myself, I wonder if many of the critics of Scientology are connected with pharmaceutical companies. There are imperfect people in all religions.

Thank you for this post; Scientology is indeed dangerous.  But you need to check your facts about psychiatry and the Holocaust.  As documented in Robert Jay Lifton's book The Nazi Doctors and many other sources, the Nazis did indeed start their road to mass murder by setting up a program known as Projekt T-4, which euthanized a quarter million psychiatric patients and other people with disabilities (labeled "useless eaters") under the leadership of the German psychiatric establishment. This allowed them to experiment with and perfect their grisly techniques before directing them toward Jews, Communists, gays, Roma, etc.

Again, I see little mention of the crime. The crime was the obfuscation to authorities of a 7 year old kid's molestation. The Scientologists who post here are more concerned with the bad PR than they are about the FREAKING RAPE of a little kid.   You have no soul. You have lost your humanity. This is partially why people think Scientology is a creepy CULT.   Y'all are gross.

As a scientologist I look forward to this scrutiny.  Eastgate will be found innocent or not guilty (whichever verbage your Aussie court system uses).  It is a "she said/she said" scenario based on a memory of a women in a coversation that may or may not have taken place.  This will be a very difficult case to prove and Tony Ortega, as a reponsible journalist should know this.  Also, an accusation does not mean guilt.  Tony Ortega should also know this.  Any reasonable Scientologist would be horrified to learn that any SO member would ever think to protect or hide child molestation.  This is inded a new low, even for Tony Ortega.  I hope when the charges are dropped or when Ms. Eastgate is found innocent , that Tony man's up and prints THAT story.

Tony, this constant attack against this group takes me back down into history and the plight that the early Christans suffered....are we all witnessing the "coming" of the 21st Religion??

I don't think Hubbard claims to be Jesus or anything like that, but thought it was a point of interest.

While the Charity Commission success isn't directly related to any criminal prosecution of the 'Church' of Scientology, there's nothing in it to preclude it either, and, I haven't heard any statement by Xenophon to the effect that he no longer wishes a criminal investigation of the 'Church'. In fact, the current prosecution of Jan Eastgate underscores the need for a wide ranging and in depth investigation of the criminal conspiracy that is Scientology.  Certainly Jan Eastgate was *not* operating alone in 1988, when the 'perversion of justice' that gave rise to the charges against her occurred. That obstruction of justice was then and is *now* an ongoing conspiracy by the highest levels of the 'Church'  and deserves to be probed.

Here in Australia, there is an independent Senator named Nick Xenophon (Nothing to do with Xenu) who stated, on record, in the senate, that he wanted an official government investigation into this disgusting, rapacious cult. I think he knew when he made his statement that there would be no such investigation because interfering with a so-called "religion" is very sensitive territory for any government.

However, Xenophon has achieved what he wanted, he wanted to snap Australian authorities out of the apathy and vague sense of nervousness about pursuing this infamously litigious cult. What he achieved was convincing senior investigators that they had the implied, if not explicit, support of the big guys in government.

Watch as this horrible organisation and its nefarious deeds are unravelled, string by string in my country. Then, watch as Scientology does what it always does when shown to be the corrupt, manipulative cult it always has been - It will go on the attack and loudly proclaim that it is being victimised and what a huge violation of their rights it is.

Australia - kicking them down-under where it really hurts!

Tony, you were warned that reading OTIII before you're ready would give you pneumonia or drive you insane. Since you're already insane (poking a vicious cult with words is not exactly sane behavior) the only explanation for your pneumonia is your out-gradient perusal of The Tech.

Please report to your local Church of Scientology immediately. You must get on course immediately to rectify this situation.

Please let Eastgate give her side of the story.  --As a long term Scientologist I can tell you that no Scientologist would be encouraged or allowed to violate the law.  Scientology is dedicated to making a better, happier world within the legal system (and to change the legal system where it is repressive). Any individual who did otherwise, Scientologist or otherwise, would be counseled that all good outcomes can be achieved within legal systems.  I hope this is helpful to any of you who are wondering about this. --Illegal methods will show themself to be counter-productive and will bring on personal grief, eventually.

Scientology is the only "religion" where lying is actually part of the the religious doctrine."The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."- LRH, Technique 88    The $cientologists trying to defend or parse this issue are only doing what their religious (edit: cult) indoctrination  demands.      This cult is evil and most be brought to justice. The wonderment of this tragedy is that it finally is.

Glad you're feeling better, Tony. Don't push it. You don't want permanent lung damage.

Thanks for telling this important story. Jan Eastgate, who now lives in Los Angeles, is the president of the CCHR International. There's nobody higher in the CCHR organisation than her.

She's also one of the 20 people sent to Texas last year in an attempt to "recover" escaped Sea Orger John Brousseau.

In fact, Mike, the Eastgate case is almost a re-run of the Tony Strawn case (google it.)  And,t he 'obstruction of justice' is a duplicate of what Marty Rathbun has already 'confessed' to (in the Lisa McPherson case,)  although he (mistakenly) declared his own criminal activity for the 'Church' to be 'past the statute of limitations'.

No such luck Marty :)  There *is* no statute of limitations on an ongoing criminal conspiracy.  Neither federally nor in Florida.  (Nor as far as I know, in Australia.)

Joe Lynn
Joe Lynn

I should be surprised that you draw your scneario 'as a Scientologist', but, I'm not.  'As a Scientologist' you 'postulate' the falsity of the charges.  Based on?  Being a Scientologist and in recognition that if the charges are *true*, they're damning; not only for Jan Eastgate, but for the Scientology Organization itself.

So, they *must* be false.

Another scenario:  The accusations go to to trial.  Witnesses are called.  Evidence is gathered.  Subpoenas are served and internal correspondence and records are seized.  The witnesses testify *under oath*.   Whether Jan herself testifies (I assume some equivalent to a '5th Ammendment' exists) doesn't matter.   *Other* witnesses exist.  Other documentation exists, no matter how much the 'Church' tries to hide it.

Maybe even Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder can testify, although, they seem unlikely to be 'willing' witnesses, since their entire purpose is to protect Scientology from criminal justice.

But, in any case, witnesses will testify under oath, and it may indeed be 'he said/she said', but, in the case of a Scientologist testifying about Scientology, any juror would *recognize* not only the lies, but the *pattern* of lies; over more than 50 years.

Because, Jan Eastgate didn't attempt to obstruct justice for her own benefit;  She did it, on orders from her Scientology seniors, and, she did it to *protect* Scientology.  And *that* is a criminal conspiracy that touches on *everything* that the Scientology Movement means.

The one thing this cults does do well is lie!  And they've been at it since the beginning.

"The only way to control people is to lie to them."  - LRH

Of course cult members have been told to break the law!  Over and over again!  They regard WOG laws as beneath them.  Heck, MM, you could do 'stand-up' with the material you have.

Tony Strawn.Kha-khan Gabriel Williams.

There are many cases of child abuse in Scientology, and a well-documented history of attempted cover ups. Cats are better at concealing their nuggets in a catbox than Scientologists are at covering up misdeeds.

If the tech worked, you'd be smarter and get away with this stuff. There's your sign.

Lindylo

Dear Scientology Student MM -- only the internal inner ranks collude to break the law -- case in point: Operation Snow White.  Last month the attorney for Scientology Gur Finklestein in Tel Aviv was arrested and indicted on 11 allegations including murder and plotting to blow up one of their own buildings to frame someone.  That is called Operation Violet Wreath.  Not convicted, but fishy.

The general public is not privvy to these flagrant violations of the law.

What is insidious is that the plan is not "to break the law" -- rather, instead there is a zealotry, a belief system that rabidly justifies anything is worth protecting this precious thing that will save all mankind for all eternity. Those more on the public level, buying services, might experience it in the way of encouraging conflicts, including those that break the law, to be settled internally.  I personally know someone who was encouraged not to go to the law to report a fraud of nearly half a million dollars by a Scientologist. Instead, they paid WISE, the business division, and the mediation went horribly. The money had been put back into the Church of Scientology, so the proceedings were biased!!  Those people who were defrauded believed in all the ideologies of Scientology. They benefited from the practical help in the courses. But those ideologies are violated in a big way.In a heinous way.

The Black Propaganda and Fair Game does not only go after "SPs" anymore (Suppressive Persons."  It is leveled against good decent positive people.  The Church of Scientology is showing itself a monstrous FAILURE at communication with the world and its former staff and members   My God, isn't the basic course you sell Communication?!

You don't sound like the typical troll, so I'm going to address you as a true scientologist who believes every word in your post.  Hope you will listen to me as a former sci (yep, even OT, Sea Org, the whole shebang).

Most of us got in because of those beliefs and because we were activists.  We wanted to do something about making it better.  But little tiny and some not so tiny policies and orders would hit our logic sided brain areas, and this includes not going to the police.  You and I both know that would be a High Crime and "suppressive act".

Most Scientologists are Not idiots or criminals and would not help a pedophile, or violate any human rights.  What You must realize is that most when they hear about the crimes and abuses that are going on, leave.  Most, when they hear they must not read or listen to something,  not say certain things,  leave.  And all, not most or some, who go to the police despite policy not to are declared, then harrassed and denigrated and sometimes much more vile and illegal actions by sci management.

Listen, even in the Sea Org,  you don't ever know what's really going on.  And those who do know something, only have a small piece of the puzzle.  It is Designed That Way!

Jan Eastgate, I didn't know her.  But what I know of her is she is the long term result and product of the destructive and criminal elements of Scientology.  Yes, there's abuse and misuse in any category of human endeavor.  Scientology manipulated and used Jan like they use anyone who gets sucked in.   Please, go to the forbidden zone and find out the truth.  Then look around for other avenues of helping make the world better, but look at actual results and history before you jump in.   I sincerely wish you a better journey.

When Scientology OT7 Rex Fowler shot his coworker in the face after he was caught funneling money to Scientology from the company funds was that legal? Of course it was because Scatology cult members have their own law that says anything in defense of Scientology is ok, that is how Jan got in to this situation. That's a fact.  There is also a procedure called TR-L where a person drills a scenario where they learn how to lie "facily".  Truth.  Most importantly is the fact that Scientologists' justice (well, the word is used, the concept is lost) codes forbid a scientologist going to the police.  Their reasoning is that they are superior in justice, as they are superior in all matters.  The truth is that management doesn't what unfavorable PR that might get members to wake the hell up or new recuits or scam victims to change their mind and money.

The other truth is that for the most part only the most pathological rise to the top in scientology.  There's been a few exceptions, but usually they don't last long.  Another truth is the fact of this cult having a militia like management,  mafia like, spy like special units called OSA (Official of Special Affairs),  huge list of attorneys worldwide, private investigators.

It's also true that most of the time, over the entire span of its existence,  who has the most money is the person who gets a get out of jail card, meaning scientology jail or being kicked out.   The only exceptions have been when an incident got too much press coverage, got found out.  Then whoever got dumped like a hot potatoe.

Been there done that from way way back.  Got a clue and left, but others I knew stuck around.  They've all left too.  But now I see and hear from scientologists themselves doing the same old same old.  There is holy scripture in sci that also forbids reform.

Thank you, Tony, and thank you Carmen for your bravery and strength.

I love how the stupid scientologists are queuing up to try and divert attention from the fact that child rape is rampant in scientology, and even the top management covers it up.

Yes, and Brousseau was assistant to scientology psychopath (but in a spiritual way) leader, David Miscavige, wasn't he?  So why was the International President of CCHR one of this harrassing posse?  Oh wait.  So was Tom Cruise's assistant, Michael Donovan (in this posse).  Not insane at all, or illegal much, right scientologists.

Yes, this is how your donations are spent, scientologists!  20 people taken off their jobs and flown in to harrass  someone who Knew Too Much, way too much, about the real doings of der Leader.  This and lawyers and PI's.

Well, it certainly isn't spent on the slaves of sci, now is it?  Been six decades and they still don't even  have health insurance.   Your money goes to help a sociopath commit crimes and violate human rights, and attempt to squash Free Speech.  Don't pretend to be shocked.  The moment you agree to an order about what you can read, hear or say, you have forfeited your rights to object to anything whatsoever.
