Jose Reyes Still Trails in All-Star Vote?! What's Wrong With You People?!

This is for all New York baseball fans. I'm talking to you. I don't care whether you're a Yankees fan or Mets fan or somebody who just lives in or around New York and follows both teams. I want to know what the hell is the matter with you! Jose Reyes still trailed Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki by about a couple of hundred thousand votes, at last count.

Let me repeat that: Jose Reyes, perhaps the greatest shortstop in New York history (after Derek Jeter, Pee Wee Reese and Phil Rizzuto) and the favorite to win this year's National League MVP, is more than 200,000 votes behind someone named Troy Tulowitzki.

Let's reflect for a moment (using stats from earlier this week): Reyes is currently outhitting Tulowitzki — and I'm going to call him Troy from here on — by 65 points (.341 to .276). Troy has 50 RBIs to Jose's 32, while Jose has scored 61 runs to Troy's 40. Jose has 28 stolen bases to Troy's 6. His on-base percentage is 49 points higher than Troy's (.385 to .336).

What does Troy lead Jose in? Home runs, 14 to 3, which is totally irrelevant since Reyes has the higher slugging percentage (.514 to .488). Reyes is a better fielder. I don't recall ever having seen Troy field a ball, but I don't have to. (I'm told you can go on MLB.com for a terrific play Troy made.)

So why is Jose of New York trailing Troy of Colorado in the All-Star balloting? Because you are lazy, hypocritical bastards who bring "Don't trade Jose" signs to the ballpark but then don't take the trouble to vote 25 times (as you're permitted) for him on MLB.com.

Fielding percentage, which represents the accuracy of a fielders throwing arm as well as their surehandedness, gives Tulo the clear edge, yes. That's far from being a comprehensive defensive statistic, though. Two of the bigger pieces of an shortstop's defensive game are left out: arm strength and range. As strong as Reyes' arm is, Tulo's arm is really unmatched...and Tulo has always rated higher with regard to range. I'm not really sure what evidence there is to back the claim that Reyes is a superior fielder to Tulowitzki, because I haven't found it. I'm a Mets fan, too...

Tulo has a fielding % of .990 while reyes is .973.

reyes won't continue at this pace, he like the rest of the met's, will blow in the second half of the season while Troy will continue to get better as he is a second half player.

Anyway what's the matter East Coast? Getting 80% of the baseball media attention not enough for you? Need it all? Greedy true stereotype I guess.
