Just a Few Business Days Left For Gay Marriage

Sunday will mark the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling in Loving v. Virginia, the ruling which made interracial marriage legal at the federal level. The American Foundation for Equal Rights released a video marking the occasion, a key precedent in the legal battle for gay marriage equality and an important basis for AFER's initial federal court victory in their challenge to the constitutionality of California's Prop 8.

But back on the state level here in the New York, the chances for victory at this moment for gay marriage look grim. There are just a few business days left on the legislative calendar for the Senate to act, and the votes do not seem to be there. Governor Cuomo is extremely hesitant to bring up a vote without the assurance of victory, while some advocates are urging him to bring up the vote in this session anyhow, just to see where Senators stand.

As of today, Act On Principle's whip count lists 26 yes votes, 10 no, 18 "leaning no", and 8 undecided.

""As of today, Act On Principle's whip count lists 26 yes votes, 10 no, 18 "leaning no", and 8 undecided.""In other words 36 no votes, about the same as it was when it went down to defeat in 2009.  And this is after  strong-arm tactics of Cuomo and Bloomberg, as well as the media trying to brainwash the public.

Try again in 2012?  I don't think so.  Those want to retain their seats would rather not have something like this fresh in the public's mind going into an election.
