The New York Police Department gave the artist Lin Evola 946 guns, "taken from suspects or turned in during buyback programs," which she promptly melted and made into a five-foot statue of an angel. The sculpture is meant to promote peace and will be displayed at Police Headquarters, Commissioner Ray Kelly announced yesterday at a Jersey City junkyard. Evola runs the Art of Peace Chartible Trust nonprofit. "We have a very real and very achievable goal of interrupting the cycle of violence within our neighborhoods," she said, "...by supporting the removal of illicit weapons and transforming them into inspirational peace angels." How do we know she melted the guns down? I mean, re-sell the guns on the street, take a little of the cash, buy cheap scrap metal for the sculpture and pocket the remaining money.
