Michael Bloomberg, Billionaire Mayor, Recommends Staten Island Ferry For a Date

Our venerable mayor has an idea for an oh-so-precious date that seems to come right out of the HowAboutWe playbook (in fact, it does come from the HowAboutWe playbook!). How about we...sit on the Staten Island Ferry and gaze romantically out at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty? That's what Mike Bloomberg used to do before he had a ton of money.

According to the Post:

"When I first came to New York, my recollection is it was a nickel. And I think if you stayed on the same boat, it would take you back," the mayor said yesterday on his WOR radio show.

"And it's a true story. I used to buy a pizza and a six-pack and have a date." "Big spender," interjected radio host John Gambling.

But you know what? The ferry knows it's in the love game. Its website says the "5 mile, 25 minute ride also provides a majestic view of New York Harbor and a no-hassle, even romantic, boat ride, for free!" Our recommendations for your date: bring an iPod with which you can play "Let the River Run" as a personal soundtrack to your journey and go at a time when it isn't crowded in order to grab a seat outside, in nice weather. Romantical!

Noted: It seems the Staten Island Ferry is the only thing in New York City that has gotten cheaper over time -- other than our very own newspaper.
