The National Weather Service has put New York City and surrounding areas under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. this evening. The watch is also effective for counties in Connecticut and New Jersey. Along with potential tornadoes and hail, a "thunderstorm wind gust" of up to 70 miles per hour and "dangerous lightning" are also in the forecast. Oy. There have been 10 tornadoes in the city's five boroughs since 1950, according to the National Climatic Data Center, and let's not forget the one that hit Brooklyn last September.
