Eyewitnesses on Twitter are reporting that police stopped a woman from jumping off the roof at 1 Essex Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side. As seen above, an inflatable landing pad was set up below the building, but officers managed to grab the woman before it was necessary. "I wasn't watching when the police grabbed her, couldn't watch, and but there was a huge crowds cheering and clapping when she was saved," says Peter Rojas. Updated below with more details.

The young woman was in her 20s, Detective Madelyn McTague told us at the scene.

McTague and Brian Glacken of the Emergency Service Unit were the ones to bring her down from the ledge after 45 minutes of talking and asking her to come down willingly; they eventually had to grab her and take her down themselves. Glacken said she was initially standing and even though he and McTague were able to get her to sit down she was "getting very emotional" and inching forward.

"She just had a series of bad things happen to her," McTague said. "She was sad."

The woman, who McTague described as "very sweet," was then brought to a hospital, but McTague could not identify which one. -- Esther Zuckerman

Here are a few more photos from the scene, which show the crowd gathered and an aerial view of the roof:
