Vancouver Riot Kissing Couple Might Have Staged Make Out

The heartwarming and Photoshop-ready picture of a Vancouver pair making out during last night's post-Stanley Cup riots in Canada took over the world (and especially the internet) today. To hear him tell it, the photograph, by Getty Images stringer Rich Lam, was pure luck. "I was trying not to get my ass kicked," he said to the Vancouver Sun. "I didn't even look at it. A colleague said 'nice photo'. Then I went back to the editing room, and looked at it. My jaw dropped." But the above shot, from another angle, makes the whole thing look staged. (Update: Everyone involved says it's legit! And now there's video confirmation -- see below.)

We're not sure where the one up top (hosted on Facebook) came from, but it's all over comment sections far and wide, where all internet cynics come to play.

Many cried that the instantly iconic shot was manipulated as it first made the rounds online this morning, but Lam spoke with NPR, the New York Daily News, MSN and more about the photo and said no such thing about staging or digital altering.

"I don't want to sound idealistic," he told the Sun, "but I was just doing my job."

Lam said that at first he thought people were hurt, which could explain what's going on in the alternate angle above, but it also could easily be posing. It wouldn't be the first time in the history of the image.

No one has found the couple yet, but unconfirmed witnesses are coming out of the woodwork with one noting, "fyi, the girl appeared to hurt her ankle and that is why the photo was able to come into existence."

We reached out to Lam, whose official website is here, and he told us he was "swamped."

He pointed us toward Getty and we'll update if we hear back.

Update: The identity of the couple is no longer a mystery -- it's Scott Jones, 29, and his girlfriend Alexandra Thomas, the Vancouver Star reports. They spoke with Scott's dad, Brett Jones. "She had actually been injured," he said, keeping with the above version of events. "She had been knocked down by a shield."

"He lay down next to her to comfort her. She was crying and he just kissed her to calm her down."

Love is real.

Update 2: Now the Sun reports that they've obtained video of the event, which they turned into a sequential photographic slideshow. Here's a statement from the rooftop videographer:

"I was trapped on the roof of the parkade on Seymour between Georgia and Robson on the night of the riot. I am a student photographer and I shot some images and video from the roof. It's not the clearest footage but I think it shows that they are not kissing, and that she is injured. It also shows the boy, who she may or may not have known, trying to protect her from the riot squad... I would like to clear up the situation so that the jokes at this poor girls expense can end."

The Kiss was romantic...the riots barbaric...some people RIOT when they win and RIOT when they lose...maybe they enjoy the mayhem and looting...pyromania?

It's a great shot. From a photographer's point of view, it's almost perfect. BTW, don't start reading the grammar tirades below, you'll get sucked into the never-ending vortex of insanity. Those who decry the use of "u" over "you" are language loathers, not language lovers. True language lovers are like the couple in this picture, Ready, adaptable, and embrace change. English spelling was standardized, largely, by the printing press. That tradition is being passed onto the internet. cya, u, brb, btw are all entering the venacular and it's an exciting time to live in for ANY true language lover. Embrace the change, people... because you can't fight it.

". . . photoshop ready" ????  That was a stupid description of a moment in life captured by a photojournalist.   Is this a photography column?  The writer should have more sense if it is.

This scene (or perhaps the whole riot) will be re-done in some movie somewhere.  It's almost guaranteed.  Wonder what direction the movie maker in question will bend the story?

Amazing that this thread started out on a picture that was wonderful and romantic and we ended up talking about texting and profanity and the english language.....The words "Make love not war" comes to mind.

Daytonarick2002
Daytonarick2002

I had read another story calling the kissing couple photograpgh a "Make love; not war" picture, and that it was not staged. it was simply the angle and timing of the time that the photgrapgh was shot. If that photo that caused the controversy that started this thread can be called "Make love; not war", then how is it that the dicussion turned into a bitter battle of wills over how to post messages?                                                           Irony at it's best, now let slip the dogs of war!

I do not understand why any educated person would spend any time with the your, you are thingy.  Many, many, many, many people use the spelling  'your' as 'you are', yes it is incorrect, but the majority of people know it is incorrect.  It is very simple to open the dictionary and find the reason why they are not the same, they don't  sound the same ei  .NE ENGLISH MJOR CN TL YOU THAT!!  However, calling a person an anal orafice because they correct a person and that person did not take the time to look it up is fowll.  lol

What the hell is wrong with the people involved in the riot? This is not the first time they have had riots in Canada when their team loses... IT IS JUST A GAME!!!! Talk about sore losers... Makes alot of sense... "Our team lost so lets tear up our town and see if we can get alot of people injured, arrested, or maybe even killed"... Dumb fucks!

This photo is a complete fake. The image was photoshopped in, any idiot with experience can see it. The lighting, the resolution, the detail, the sharpness, the shadows....nothing matches the original photo it was copied into, except the colors, and blending the colors is a simple, simple photoshop tweak.

Just ask yourself how could they be so crisp and sharp and everything so blurred and dull around them.

Suckers, suckers, suckers.

Telling The Truth
Telling The Truth

Obviously you don't know much about photography. Most cameras used by professional photographers can focus on one specific detail in the picture while leaving surrounding details slightly blurred. There's a raw video of the two as well, so once you see that I highly doubt you can call this photo a "complete fake." http://www.vancouversun.com/sp...

BS.  A lover will PICK UP his injured dove and carry her to safety, not kiss her and reassure her that she's safe from the tear gas or men racing to run over them.

Perfect timing on the kiss. They'll be on every t.v. news now or  perhaps, they'll  become part of history..The fools trolling others on spelling, proper wording etc. need a real life in the teaching world or just a real life ^^ Happy Father's Day <eg></eg>

Hello
Hello

The creation of many modern objects, such as phones that make text messaging an option; remote controls; and vehicles, are helping us be lazier.  Have any of you spent 5-10 minutes looking for a t.v. remote control instead of walking to the t.v. and turning it on? What about text messaging instead of actually calling a person because we just did not want the hassle of a long conversation where the other person will not let you off the phone until you say "goodbye" for the 20th time? Last, driving a block from your house instead of walking? I love the ability to text message, use a remote control, and drive my Ford Explore, but I think the world (at least America) is more convenient and lazy as a result.  Just a random rant.

Okayyyyyy..........
Okayyyyyy..........

I think all of these comments below provide support for the television commercial about information overload.  I have seen these comments go from discussions about the kiss to punctuation and grammar to a whole stream of turrett syndrome-style comments that seem to have resulted from one person using the words "smart ass."  Reading these comments has been an amusing and insightful experience. It appears that people often prefer to be more negative than positive in their comments.

Who cares? All that matters is that they are both okay! Let's get real - there is real fighting going on in other parts of the world. There shouldn't be fighting over a sports event anyway - what kind of silliness is that? You don't see the players out there trying to get hurt...

Hyppye
Hyppye

Who care if this was rigged, set up, for fame or whatever.  It makes a good statement of "make love, not war," and that fighting like that over the outcome of a sporting event is absolutely ridiculous. That is one reason I am a sports player, not a spectator.
