Atheists Don't Want World Trade Center Cross at the 9/11 Memorial

Atheists groups have been particularly vocal about what they do and don't want with regard to 9/11 memorials, whether they be street signs in Red Hook (Seven in Heaven Way) or displaying the World Trade Center cross at the 9/11 Memorial. The American Atheists have filed a lawsuit, which names defendants including the city of New York and Mayor Mike Bloomberg, as well as the priest who initially blessed the cross, and said in a press statement that the "government enshrinement of the cross was an impermissible mingling of church and state."

The World Trade Center "cross" consists of two intersecting steel beams that remained when the towers collapsed, and was moved on Saturday to a spot at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, where it was blessed in a service by a Franciscan monk who ministered to workers who helped clear the area after the attacks.

While the American Atheists consider the cross "a Christian icon" that ignores the diverse backgrounds of the people who died that day, as well as a reminder that "their god, who couldn't be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross," Joe Daniels, president of the Memorial, considers it a symbol of progress and a part of the commitment to bring back physical reminders that tell the story of 9/11.

Meanwhile, conservative, Christian, pro-life group the American Center for Law and Justice (founded by Pat Robertson) has said they will file a "friend of the court" brief in support of the cross. (They're one of the groups who tried to block the Islamic center in downtown New York.)

The Cross is a definite sign of a Satanic Symbol of Achievement. Unless we recognize this hatred will spread world wide causing economic collapses.

Well, how about the star of David, or a fish. Silly people!

So let us put the star of David up at 9/11, instead of the cross. Or we could put a fish.

Quick question: how much of a frigging miracle is it that metal is joined at right angles in the construction of buildings?

It's physics, you idiots. Jeebus had nothing to do with this.

The cross is on government property, being funded with tax dollars. All the Atheist organization is objecting to is that the government is involved in endorsing a particular religion. They say openly that they don't mind if you display religious symbols, as long as the government isn't involved, because the government deals with laws, and when religion is involved it forces that belief on others. They just don't want your belief to be forced on them. Why is that such a terrible thing to request? You wouldn't want their beliefs forced on you, so put yourself in their situation. They just want to live their lives with equal respect.

When a government starts giving special treatment to one religion, that religion's laws start to sink into the governments laws. They don't want that to happen, and just want to live equally. Christians can display that cross anywhere that isn't government property. It's not hard at all.

If you think this was some miracle formation from God, you got to look into things more before jumping to conclusions. The World Trade Center was made with "t" beams. So when it collapses it's naturally going to make a cross shape.

@Bob yeah they might say that they aren't against it but EVERYONE knows they are, they bitch about everything patriotic this country does so it's quite obvious they want it gone.

Another attack on Christians? When will they stop being persecuted? @Apple: Are you hinting that since the steel was not twisted and it looks like a cross that it is a miracle? Cuz if so, you should see the grilled cheese I made for lunch...I see Jesus!!

As an atheist, sometimes my side doesn't know when to shut the fuck up.  Now is one of those times when we need to shut our mouths and not be whiny tits.

This is a site of many, many deaths and if religious people need a symbol of their faith to sanctify it, fine.  If other faiths want to put up symbols, fine.  It's not going to kill anyone to see religious symbolism on the site of a horrific massacre.

The cross emerged from the twin towers after they fell. The beams were intact and was presented in that way. Maybe if we can find a steel beam that bends like a crescent moon, or one that somehow ends up as a yin yang symbol or maybe a wheel for Buddhists...

Atheists do NOT oppose the cross. They oppose government funds being used to erect a Christian monument to honor those Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists, et al who were tragically murdered on 9/11, without providing a relevant, related symbol for each of the belief systems. *IF* government funds are to be used for this, erect a wall to honor them, or lady justice, but not a cross, not the Islamic Crescent, not a statue of Buddha, but something non-sectarian. *IF* private donors wish to erect a cross for this purpose, more power to them, but don't even pretend to think a cross provides the same impact for the memories of non-christians as it does the christians who died that day. How would most proponents of this cross feel if government funds, mixed with funds from Park 51 were used to erect, at this location, a quintet design with the islamic crescent at the top, the star of david and the christian cross in the middle, above a statue of buddha, surrounded by a wall, engraved with a peace sign, listing the names of those lost? Park 51 funds + Government funds, putting the islamic crescent *above* the cross? Heresy! Christians would go nuts over government money being spent like this, yet it's MUCH more inclusive and respectful to the beliefs of those who died. Leave religion out of this, or leave government funds out of this, please.
