Violence against gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people was up last year, both in New York City and the nation at large, according to the 2010 National Report on Hate Violence. The report was released today by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs. While 2010 will be remembered as the year people like Tyler Clementi triggered a greater awareness of teen suicide, it will also go down as a record year of violence against LGBT people, particularly in "safe" neighborhoods in New York City.

Across a broad variety of factors, the incidents of violence were up. Some highlights from the report's executive summary:

-- Reports of anti-LGBTQH hate violence increased by 13% from 2009 to 2010

-- Anti-LGBTQH murders increased 23% from 2009 (22 murders) to 2010 (27 murders), the second highest amount in a decade

-- LGBTQH people of color were disproportionately impacted by murder. LGBTQH people of color comprised 70% of all LGBTQH murder victims in 2010 but only represented 55% of total reports

-- Transgender women were disproportionately impacted by murder. 44% of LGBTQH murder victims were transgender women, yet only 11% of total reports came from transgender women.

-- 50.1% of survivors did not report to the police.

-- 53% of hate violence occurs in a private residence or on the street.

-- White people were the highest proportion of hate violence offenders.

Especially noteworthy last year were a series of attacks that occurred in and around gay bars in the West Village and Chelsea, which have long been mistakenly thought to be safe neighborhoods.

Wrigleyville25,You posted this same comment and question on another site under the name Janet but I'm more than happy to respond quickly here.  Even before the terms lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, queer, intersex, questioning, or transgender (among others) came to exist, a number of the early scholars referred to these groups as transsexual which simply meant that the term 'homosexual' was too simplistic to encompass all of the varied forms of gender and sexual orientation that existed and even these are at times overly essentialized.  Transgender indidividuals are also 'proud' of who they are and like everyone else, they learn early this identification with the gender that is the opposite of the one that they are born.  Keep in mind that gender orientation and sexual orientation are too different things and I would suggest looking these up for a fuller explanation.  Trangendered individuals are required to be evaluated by a mental health provider to be certain that they meet certain criteria but only those that wish to change their gender/sex (from male to female or female to male).  A number of mental health providers don't like this idea because it potentially  pathologizes a group of folk who are seeking medical treatment but the flip side is that it may screen out individuals who may not be appropriate for one reason or another to make the transition.  Now let me be clear, we are hearing a lot more about reparative therapy and conversion therapy in the news lately and that is a different group of folk many of them identify as gay and seek treatment so that they no longer live as gay.  While the Amer. Psychiatric Ass., Amer. Psychologcal Ass., and the Ameri. Counseling Ass. ( to name a few) have done studies and have concluded that these forms of therapy are not only unfounded in terms of outcomes they are potentially dangers to their clients, there are a number of mental health professions who not unlike Michelle Bauchmann's husband continue this disturbing form of counseling.  Please read more about these topics before you pass judgement on or dismiss the experiences of a group that you know little about or what you have learned is gained from non peer reviewed sources...

I also am a psychologist, so don't give me studies and statistic mumbo jumbo.  Gays still have many battles to fight for rights.  Transgenders fill out paperwork and magicallly they can marry whomever they like.  We are totally separate groups with different issues to deal with.  Transgenders become another sex .  They appear to the public as how they want to be viewed.  They can keep their secret find a partner who will accept who they are.  Gays are still in the trenches.

Wrig.  I was getting ready to finish my thought when I read your comment to me and I must say that as a mental health profession I find your question to be valid in some ways; however, I am a little perplexed and don't know how to respond to you given the fact that yoou identify as gay and are a psychologist in the field.  I would hope that this dual status would make you more empathis to and sensitive to issues of gender and sexuality...I don't think that I wish to continue this discussion with you; however, I'd advise that you read more about gender orientation and sexual orientation as a starting point and then expand this concept to get a better understanding of how these categories came to exist and the benefits (for some) for maintaining them and what this may mean for those who embody difference.  I'm a little appauled but hopeful that you will do some work to elevate your knowledge on these sensitive subjects....All the best...

I do not understand the trend Of the LGBT .  I am gay and am proud of it.  How do transgenders get grouped into gays?  I do not want to be another sex.  I love women.  I do not want to be a man.  I want to know who  in the hierarchy of defining groups decided that people who are not happy with their sex get grouped with people who know who they are.  I am offended by the suggestion that I should be included in a group of people who need counseling and medical intervention on the sex they want to be.

Get off your high horse wrigleyville25.  Transsexuals are included with homosexuals because they are usually vilely affected by homophobia as well. Keep in mind that just how you imply transgender people don't know who they are, a prejudiced straight person can see you as a lesbian freak who's not aware of her body enough to know vaginas are for pricks, not chicks.  Your prejudice doesn't do the gay community any favors.

Just to continue the discussion which I wanted to start, are you suggesting that all groups of sexually vile groups considered thus by ignorant straight people should be included in one category?  In that case should pedophiles, and all manner of sexual deviants be compared to lesbians and gays?  I think you need to think about it.  I have asked many of my gay friends what they think about LGBT and they are baffled by the fact that now we are now part of the transgender group. I am not disrespecting these people but come on we do not have the same issues.  Transgender people change their paperwork and magically they can marry whomever they want.  Gays have many more battles to fight for their rights.

Hey Wrigly...,Heteronormativity-this institutional and systematic separation of bodies and differential treatment which privildeges heterosexuality also tends to collapse all other forms of sexual resistant (deviation) to (or from) the 'norm' into separate categories.  In doing heterosexuality (this unchallanged norm) becomes parasidic on the existance of difference.  There no need to define heterosexuality it becomes the polar opposite to those other categories and is deemed good and the others bad.  While there are certainly a number of differences between the groups (one may be a number of consensual while others like pedaphelia are predatory) and while there are all of these differences, clumping them makes it easier to argue whether these occur because of nature v nurture or a choice rather than something innate.  They also conflate these groups and ignore some forms of sexual resistance while paying a lot of attention to others.
