Soccer Fans Say NYPD Used Excessive Force After Uruguay Win

soccer.jpg
After Uruguay defeated Paraguay in the finals of the Copa America on Sunday, ecstatic fans flooded the streets of Jackson Heights. Minutes later, dozens of police officers arrived at 37th Avenue and 84th Street and began pushing back the crowd. This led to scuffles between the soccer fans and the police. Residents felt that the police response was unjust; "I couldn't call 911. They were the same people abusing us," said Silvana Sislian, 46, manager of La Gran Uruguaya Bakery, to the Daily News.

The NYPD said yesterday that the officers "responded appropriately in dealing with disorderly elements" in the large crowd, which they estimate was seven or eight hundred people.

Sislian said that when they arrived, some police officers smashed Uruguayan flags against the pavement, and this sparked the conflict. It is unclear to what extent things got out of control, but five revelers were arrested, and two officers were treated at the hospital for bruises.

One of the arrested celebrators, Ronel Mendoza, 19, said that he was playing drums on the sidewalk when the police arrived, and when things got bad, he went to the bakery to check on his sister and the police grabbed him. "They arrested me for nothing," he said.

Another celebrator Antonio Carvallo, 78, was pushing his walker down the street when the police arrived and he was caught in the chaos. "I felt impotent and angry against those wearing a blue uniform," he said.

"The police spoiled the most important day in the last 20 years of Uruguay's soccer history," Sislian said.

and THIS is why I moved from USA to Uruguay, the opposite of these folks. I'm not even Uruguayan or of hispanic/latino descent, I'm primarly Irish descent, my family came west in covered wagon generations ago, and I left USA, for more personal freedoms and to be treated as a human, not a peon. I moved to Uruguay because of this ^ and I love it.

I am sorry to my uruguayan compatriots, but I disagree.  I have lived in Queens for over 25 years and have celebrated many soccer wins in Corona.  The police have ALWAYS been courteous and respectful.  The have barricaded the streets allowing us to celebrate to our hearts desire.  There has always been a mutual respect between the Argentine community and the police of Corona and Jackson Heights.  The difference is that we always secure the permits needed for public assembly and when the police say that the time is up, everyone peacefully goes home thanking the police for thier assistance.  The Uruguayans in this situation are WRONG.  Whether it was 50 or 1000 ppl is irrelevant.  This is the US and you have to abide by the laws.  If you wanted to celebrate on the street, you should have secured the necessary permits.  Other than that: you were obstructing traffic, Loitering, i'm sure more than a few were disorderly, probably public drunkeness, noise pollution, belligerent, etc.   And this woman from the bakery is probably just seeking publicity...not justice...if she was working in the bakery...how does she know the police were unjustified?  how does she know that her fellow countrymen were not out of line?  If you watch the videos, you can hear the disrespect from the uruguayans saying that if they were back in uruguay....they would beat the cops with sticks...Im sure you can guage the level of respect they were showing.  Furthermore, I did not see not ONE SINGLE evidence in any of the videos of this so called "brutality".  The police acted in accordance to thier powers to disperse a crowd that had NO RIGHT to assemble and obstruct traffick and endanger others.  This is all nonsense. Paren de hacer QUILOMBO che!

You know what Silvana, WAKE UP!! The majority of police officers, not just in NY, but even in Seattle where I live, are racist and abuse their power. I know this because as a firefighter who happens to be un Uruguayo, I hear the racist comments and disrespect of minorities cops make when we respond to calls with them. Yeah, you're right, there probably was a few drunks in the crowd, and so what, it's not like they were vandalizing. Do you think it would of been any different (the crowds and the police) if they were celebrating the Yankees or the Giants. The fact is that the officers addressed the situation improperly and unproffessionally. Silvana, you remind of the typical right wing immigrant who forgets where your roots are from and who you are, in order to be excepted as an American. Usted no tiene corazon Uruguayo, vendio su corazon a los Estados Unidos. Vamos la Celeste!!!!!!

let me guess..you must be argentinian right silvina..piss off cause your team did not make it..yea that must be it..in the other hand i don't really care cause i am not even a south american or central american..but who cares..well lets talk about the pigs..no.. they did not acted in accordance with the law..ill bet if it would of happen to you, you would probably be saying the same thing..excessive power..and yes this is the usa and you have to abide by the law..but there is no reason to beat a man with a stick..if it was me i would sue the city..not for the money but for justice..or a request to the judge for permission to slap the shit out of every pig the that hit me..i think that is fair..screw the apologies and the money..a punch in the face is good enough for me..your such an ignorant person silvina (common argentinians)..didnt you see the video where the kid who step out of the bakery was handcuffed for not doing nothing and your saying its okay..you have to be such a doucebag for not seeing clearly..oh and by the way....LEARN HOW TO SPELL....long live rodney king

I did happen to see the video. The only problem with this video is that....it begins with the kid walking out of the bakery and it doesn't show the moments leading up to it. How do I or you know whether or not he deserved to get picked up by the cops? we don't. A video like that is not sufficient. You claim to have no vested interest bc you are not south or central american...some how, I don't believe it. And no, if it was happening around me, I wouldn't cry injustice just bc of national pride. For me, if someone is out of line and deserves to be arrested...arrest them. That's what we entrust the police for and why we pay taxes: to protect the community at large. Not just one entity. If u don't understand that...well, you are the ignorant one. I would also note here that I would love to know what level of education you have and maybe I would also suggest that you become familiar with american laws and local laws about public gatherings. Also, I would add that I happened to be there and...that I am uruguayan.

It's funny because in other parts of this same city and other parts of the state such as portchester the streets were closed off and people were allowed to celebrate. These cops could have done the same but resulted in yelling, pushing, breaking/throwing flags etc ruining the calm and festive atmosphere...
