$80,000 Worth of Bull Semen Shuts Down Nashville Interstate

Um, so, for your lunchtime...treat...we're giving you this. Consider it an adorable-animals-in-trouble-slash-thank goodness-you-live-in-New York City, where things like this do not happen! In Nashville, Tennessee, the on-ramp to Interstate 65 South was closed down this morning, inconveniencing some, amusing others, after several canisters of bull semen fell off a Greyhound bus. Yep. What happened next is the stuff of blog posts.

Fire and emergency crews were called to the scene amid reports of a foul odor.

When they discovered four unmarked canisters with steam and an unpleasant odor coming from them, they shut down the on-ramp and called HAZMAT crews.

Turns out, the canisters contained frozen bull sperm packed in liquid nitrogen, originating in Columbus, Ohio, and headed to a breeding facility in Laredo, Texas. It is possible, according to the news report, that the wayward canisters were worth as much as $80,000. Holy Jesus.

Some hapless local news reporter in Nashville then had to write this up. What's the over/under on whether this "pun" is on purpose?

Officials traced the containers to Greyhound after finding bus tickets on the ground. The bus did not know it lost its load and had continued on.

The leaking canisters dubbed not harmful, the scene was cleared by around 9 a.m., and, for the record, it's not uncommon for a bus to carry bull sperm, says Greyhound. (Could this happen in New York?)

The Tennessee Department of Transportation, for the record, does not find this amusing whatsoever because they are pros.

"It was no different to us than if a mattress fell off a truck," said transportation spokeswoman B.J. Doughty.
