Those who knew Jeffrey Axelrod, the cyclist who died on Thursday night while turning onto Delancey from Chrystie Street, are holding a candlelight remembrance for him tonight in Cobble Hill. Axelrod had lived at Hicks Street for the past 20 years and was a founding member and coordinator of the Cobble Hill CSA. "We will be gathering at Cobble Hill Towers in the large courtyard (at Baltic & Hicks) to light candles in Jeff's honor on Tues, August 23 at 8 p.m.," says the flier. "All neighbors and friends are welcome -- please bring a candle."

Axelrod, who may have been having trouble with his chain, apparently collided with the back of a truck, was pulled under its wheels, and was killed. He was wearing a helment. There is no criminality suspected, though Scott Stringer and others are asking the Department of Transportation to "fix this dangerous mess [a/k/a Delancey] and save lives now."

Axelrod was, by many accounts, a fixture in Cobble Hill, a man with a passion for "music, cycling, yoga, politics...life."

He was a good man and he will be missed, writes one of our commenters.
