Comments Of The Week is back! Email Web Editor Francesca Stabile (firstname.lastname@example.org) to claim your prize if we have deemed you worthy. After the jump, this week's comments:
On the post "Cabbies Are the Worst Drivers in the City, Says Poll. Here Are Our 7 Worst Cab Rides." reader Celeste Kaufman told us this great story about her own worst cab ride:
I recently came back from a trip to Central America, and the driver who took me home from the airport burst out of his car to pull me out of the middle of the line so he would be the one to drive me. He spent the first couple of minutes asking about every single country my ancestors came from so he could understand my heritage because I was so beautiful, and then I think he was sneakily trying to figure out if I was Jewish. When he found out I had been traveling alone, he started lamenting about how dangerous it was for girls to be alone (independent?) these days in "this country," and lectured me about how much better it was for women in his country because they married them off young and then they weren't allowed to go anywhere alone without their husbands, so they were safer. I should've kept my mouth shut, but I said I thought that was perpetually treating grown women like children, which launched a half hour discussion about comparative global feminism. At 4 in the morning.
On "London Looters Brag About It on Twitter; the Twitterverse Fights Back" SophieLouu92, who was involved in the fracas, gave us her take on the story:
Yeah, I'm SophieLou92, (Comment underneath Katiered) and she said she wasn't going to get caught. It wasn't until everything flew off to everyone that she said a very strung out 'apology'. I then reported her to the m twitter.
Once it started to spread, everyone was on the look out to #nameandshame the looters. Sometimes it worked, like in this case, but sometimes they just thrived off it like twitter user Solaar. So we do need to be careful.
People have now started to make Facebook groups to try and organise the riots, too!
