The Village Voice's Iconic September 11, 2001 Cover Image Has Made It to Reader's Digest

This is not deja vu. This is the image that the Village Voice ran on our paper's cover in the weeks following September 11, 2001, except now it's on the cover of Reader's Digest. As our eagle-eyed EIC Tony Ortega points out, the smoke has been edited out, and in its place there are cover lines. The color looks a little different, too, but it's clearly the same image as that art directed by Ted Keller at the Voice back in 2001.

According to Robert Newman, or @Newmanology, creative director of Reader's Digest (who formerly did, pre-9/11, work for the Voice), RD's September 2011 newsstand cover, "How 9/11 Changed America," is a "reprise of 2001 @villagevoice cover." So, credit where credit is due.

Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all that, we'll say thanks. Look for it wherever they sell Reader's Digest.

You guys are taking the 'better man' route but it honestly just looks ripped off to me. Do they even acknowledge it in this new issue of RD? Newman really couldn't dream up superior (read: slightly more original) art? Cover just seems lazy, from the photo to the type-treatment. I'm not commenting on the impact of the event, but purely the cover design/art. What does RD pay this man for?
