A Scientology Countdown Announcement: Before We Start the Top Ten, a Programming Note

BookmakerBoard.jpg
Who's number one?
Tomorrow morning, we begin to reveal the final ten in our big countdown, "The Top 25 People Crippling Scientology."

Today, however, we wanted to provide a programming note and announce some addenda.

As we predicted from the beginning, our readers have been vocal about their own choices for this countdown and its order. We want your choices to count, and here's what we're doing about it: At noon on Monday, September 19, just a few hours after we reveal #6 in our countdown, we will open voting so that you can submit your own lists of 25 people contributing the most to Scientology's nosedive. For one week, until noon on September 26, just after we reveal #3 on our list, you'll have the chance to tell us your own picks.

On Wednesday, September 28, we'll reveal our #2 pick at 9 am, our #1 pick at 11 am, and then the results of your vote at 1 pm.

(This is all contingent, of course, on the bourbon holding out here in the underground bunker. And the e-meter not losing power. And other stuff.)

Now, for the second part of our announcement. We went into this expecting all kinds of disagreement with our choices and their order (and we know it will only get more violent the higher we go). However, in a few cases, we had to agree with our readers that we'd left some folks out of our group entries who really should have been in there.

We accept all the blame for that. These people deserve every bit of recognition we're giving them now, and we only wish we'd put them in to begin with. So, if you check back at our previous entries, you'll now find the following people added...

In #23, "Ken Dandar (and other attorneys who litigate against the church)," we've added Barry Van Sickle and Michael Flynn.

In #14, "Tory Christman (and other noisy ex-Scientologists)," we've added Bent Corydon, David Love, and "Emma" of the ESMB.

In #13, "Janet Reitman (and other journalists)," we've added Nanette Asimov of the San Francisco Chronicle.

And in #12, "Tommy Davis (and other hapless church executives)," we've added Karin Pouw.

Yes, we could have added dozens more, and you no doubt will let us hear it when you get a chance to vote starting the 19th. But keep in mind, this is a subjective list that I've put together with expert help, and we've tried to stick to our own definition of "crippling Scientology" that might not fit with your own. As always, we invite you to disagree in our comments, and please check back tomorrow morning at 9 am for #10.

For obvious sentimental reasons I'd love for Aleister Crowley to appear on the list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

But the number one reason Scientology has become the ultimate "FAIL" meme is the Interwebs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

You know, that system of tubes? The "Infotainment" Net, where if some fool thought it up, another fool filmed it and posted it at the Youtubes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

No matter how shrill, silly or offensive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

It's funny, but it's a "Clear" case of new tech crushing old tech.

Great addition, wish more people would write books about their life in scientology.

Can someone amswer this one question for me?

Are there any handicap people in scientology? Like people who are dependent on wheel chairs walking canes etc.

Because, I have searched internet images on Scientology and can't find any photos or any videos. You'd think there would be tons of photos since they claim they can cure people. Just curious?

I hope you add "The Sea Organization"  to the voting list.

I'm real glad you've added David Love to your list. He's been working tirelessly for the last three years to shut down Narconon Trois-Riviere. In his determination, he has been living away from his family, in a different part of Canada, where people dont' even speak English. Now that's sacrifice. Well done David!

I think it is wonderful you are open to additions. They have all been great.

The one journalist I would add is Randy Sly at Catholic Online. He has become not only the leading Catholic critic but the leading religious critic in the Anglosphere.

Moreover Catholic Onlline stories get picked up by Catholic media all over the world. He broke stories the mainstream media hasn't covered like the cult threatening to sue the Daughters of St. Paul in Italy.

He is also the only journalist to have written about Brian Mandigo's petition to the FDA on the e-meter.He got engaged by reading Tom Tobin and Joe Childs' The Truth Rundown in June 2009. After them and Tony he has written more articles than any other journalist in the US.

The Catholic Church is justly criticized for many things. It is also the largest single Christian denomination, and a major potential ally in bringing the Church of Scientology to accountability before all of society's institutions.

Despite what the IRS says the Catholic Church does not accept the Church of Scientology as any sort of legitimate religious organization.  It is a multi-national organization and bishops are becoming increasingly concerned particularly in Canada, Hungary, St. Lucia, and India.

The cult is serious business for US Catholics. Two of our Catholic brothers have been murdered by Scientologists in the last four years. 43-year-old father of four Tom Ciancio in Denver in December 2010; and 20-year-old college student Kyle Brennan from Charlottesville, VA, in Clearwater in February 2007.

Randy Sly has been crippling enough that David Misavige dispatched spokeshole Tommy Davis to blast him by phone and email for promoting religious hate and violence and aiding and abetting the cyberterrorist hate criminals of Anonymous, whom he compared to the KKK.

In a polite Catholic fuck you, Randy wrote that as professional journalists and Christians Catholic Online would continue to report the truth.

So I think it is worth considering adding Randy.  Also, we don't like it when the cult messes with our nuns.

There should be a sidebar with the names of those who could be crippling Scientology.  Aside from politicians, current Scn celebs and law enforcement officials, there are a few key people.  One of them is Pat Broeker, supposedly the guy that was going to take over after Hubbard kicked the bucket.  After all it was his fumbling and his willlingness to be paid off that allowed Miscavige to take over the ship and now steer it into the iceberg field.

Patty Moher
Patty Moher

I'm so happy you've added Emma.  I too thought you might be saving her for the top 10.  Her message board -- ESMB-- is kicking Scn right in the ass.  She's a champ!

MarkStark
MarkStark

I was thinking Emma might be in the top ten, and here she was an afterthought.  I'm not getting too riled about the order so far, except for maybe Xenu, because being stuck in his mountain prison, I'm sure his feelings are hurt being so low on the list.

From Evil Galactic Overlord to #25 on a list. That's quite a drop.

If Cruise isn't in the top 5 at least, I'm warning you that I'm prepared to use Dianetics, Black Dianetics, Reverse Dianetics, Spaghetti Dianetics, Bark Tech and Quack-Quack Tech to protest this breach of ethics.

JustCallMeMary

Thanks for the additions! So glad you added them all, especially Narconon victim advocate David Love, and attorneys Michael Flynn and Barry Van Sickle because they have had to do the harder work in effecting changes via the law.

Tony, you raise an interesting but unanswered question:   What is your definition of "crippling scientology"?  And do you include all scientology in the definition, or just the "official" brand?

It's true the internet is killing CoS. It's informing people all over the world. Plus, YouTube is bringing them down. Some of those videos are pretty powerful in the fight against CoS.

Their motto: "Bring us your alert, your rich, your straight-backed elites, yearning to work for free."

ETA: That was a little abstruse. It was meant to be the opposite of "your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free." Yawn, it's late. ;)

Pat Broeker laughed or cried all the way to the bank, with a stopover at a bar to get a few drinks. If Broeker stayed on, he could have sunk the Scientology ship in ten years.

Search for Pat Broker Death Event to hear him talking about OT levels up to XV being released soon, including a level members were supposed to do after they drop their bodies. He holds his hand feet off the floor to show the stack of "research" Hubbard did at the Farm.

People might wonder, what is that level you are supposed to do after you drop your meat body? Maybe meet Xenu in his mountain lair?

I think the intro says it -- that official Scientology is a shell of what it was several years ago. Who's responsible? So while some people wanted to see Greta Van Susteren on the government list (which is kinda odd), I don't think that she's done much to diminish the brand -- she does a pretty good job not reminding people that she's a part of it, actually. Other people that have made the list have either actively protested or litigated or otherwise worked to expose Scientology's abuses, or through their ineptness or incompetence have given the church a poor image. I guess that's a general definition, but admittedly there's a subjective element to it.

TonyOrtega

I'm the one with the byline. That's reward (and punishment) enough for me.

The Anonymous war on Scientology broke out on the /b/channel of 4chan on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, the day after the cult forced YouTube to take down the Cruise video.

At 5:37 pm an anon started the thread "I think it is time for /b/ to do something big." The third reply is this:i think scientology is cool and the guy who had this awesome idea to create a fake religion just so he can collect money from idiots is brilliant!

Thank you, there's so much raw data out there on the Interwebs, the secrets are all out of the closet.

If you've wondered what make the E-meter work, and haven't seen these 20 minutes worth of video documentation, please watch these two videos.

I'm nothing like an electronics engineer, but I've been inside plenty of electronics and made a modification or two. The guy in these videos IS an electronics engineer and knows wherefrome he speaketh:

Ray Mithoff, Snr C/S Int, wears glasses, so as Marty, both are OT's, I am sure. It's probably just because of out-tech or suppression on their lines, or something. There is always a good fucking explanation, backed up by a few solid references straight from LRH. It's all good.

NCSP
NCSP

Oof, you may want to rethink that. Entries of raw text -- complete with alternate spellings, nicknames, and the like -- will be a bitch to tabulate. Maybe have an open thread for nominations and then prepare a list to choose from in the final vote?

Probably overthinking this. :)

@Robin; Nifty Videos! Thank you!

Yeah, the preposterous assumptions, that someone would never, ever, bring a qualified electrical engineer in, to deconstruct this moonbat appliance are truly astonishing.

The depth of *stupid* is bottomless. The cult was started by a retarded person, is being maintained by retarded people and is nothing but a bunch of stupid, retarded people!

Unfortunately, these retarded thugs seem to derive great pleasure in causing great harm to other people, with a bunch of lies, denials and cowardice.

Fortunately, they are too stupid to understand the Internet, ergo, the cult of stupid is doomed. Expect it!

Oh, I deal with the same thing every year with our Best of NYC voting. People write all kinds of things in, and then I have to spend a day correcting it all to make it consistent. After the voting closes, our web department will send me a spreadsheet of the raw data, and I am a hardcore spreadsheet nerd -- that kind of raw data is like crack to me. I will be a pig in shit going through all that making sure that ever spelling of "Nick Xenophon" or "Laura DeCrescenzo" is consistent, for example. So yeah, I know what I'm in for, but I don't mind the work.

PS - I know what 4chan is; I just haven't spent any real time there. Out of curiosity I dipped in once (never posted but looked around for about 5 minutes). There was a time when 31 wasn't old, but holy hell I never felt so ancient in my life. When I said I wasn't at all familiar with it, I meant with its thread-retention or searching aspects in particular. I appreciate the warning though!

4chan is the largest English language image board.  Check Wikipedia for background.

Warning: 4chan is somewhat chaotic and raunchy, which makes it even more amazing that the revolt against the cult arose from this obscure corner of the internetz.
