Air Conditioner Falls Out Of East Village Building

Fall has begun and that means we don't have to worry about the same things we worried about during the summer: we won't be over-heated, our ice cream won't melt, and there's no way an air conditioner could fall out of the sky and potentially kill us, right? Wrong. Read on.

EV Grieve brings us the horrifying tale of an air conditioner that fell out of a building on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street around 1 p.m. today. It landed -- precariously, we might add, judging from pictures -- on the awning of the Moonstruck On Second diner.

We called the Moonstruck and got an employee who told us "no big thing happened."

"I was so busy, I didn't go outside," he said.

Well, that's a relief. We guess.

We've thought about the potential of such an occurrence a lot.

Almost exactly a year ago and mere blocks away from this recent incident, a 67-year-old man was hit on the head by a falling air conditioner while walking his Shih Tzu on 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street. Also, this past summer Jen wrote a post attempting to answer the the question: "How Often Do Air Conditioners Fall Out of NYC Windows and Kill People?" The answer: let's just continue to worry, regardless.
