Occupy Wall Street Tweets Reports of Tear Gas, Arrests (UPDATED)

Screen shot 2011-09-24 at 2.59.15 PM.png

In Occupy Wall Street's eighth day, protesters claim on their Twitter account today that they have been targeted by tear gas, and at least 50 people have been arrested during their march through the city this afternoon headed toward the United Nations building [Updated per retraction from a member of Occupy Wall Street's public relations working group, marchers were not headed to the UN, but back to Zuccotti Park.] Read more with updates after the jump.

Member of Occupy Wall Street's Public Relations Working Group Patrick Bruner said that he heard accounts of the tear gas from people who were monitoring the protest's livestream and from another person who was in contact with someone "on the ground."

"I'm working on confirming that," he said. "I'm pretty sure it's accurate."

That said, he added that he hasn't been able to get a first-hand confirmation.

When we reached out to the NYPD's Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information we were told that the NYPD does not use tear gas and does not have it.

About 20 minutes after Occupy Wall Street tweeted about the tear gas, they added that more than 50 people have been arrested and five women were maced.

Bruner said that the arrests likely happened somewhere between 12th Street and Union Square. The report of five women being maced came to him from someone on the scene, he said, adding that that information has to be taken "with a grain of salt."

A representative from DCPI said he had not heard anything on arrests from the field yet.

We'll update as more information comes in.

Update: 3:46 p.m.
Occupy Wall Street's account just retweeted this photo of a woman, who is said to have been "pepper sprayed on 12th and university along with 5 other people."

Update: 4:03 p.m.
Bruner has just issued a retraction in regards to the tear gas tweet. He told us over the phone that it was a report perpetuated by people who saw steam coming out of vents on the livestream, which they mistook for tear gas.

Update: 4:16 p.m.
DCPI confirmed to us that there have been several arrests, but does not have specific numbers yet. Occupy Wall Street is saying that in total there have been at least 55 arrested, and at least five maced.

Update: 4:45 p.m.
Bruner told us in an email regarding the reported macings that "we know that at least one has been confirmed."

He forwarded along the following video of an arrest:

Update: 4:59 p.m.
Our Nick Pinto is in Zuccotti Park, which the protesters have dubbed "Liberty Square." He reports that the Occupy Wall Street media team says there have been over 60 arrests, based on their count. Most of the arrests happened in Union Square after police kettled the march that was taking place.

Nick also tells us that Brookfield Properties, which owns Zuccotti, posted notice that the protesters have to leave by Monday, but protest lawyers say that is not binding.

Update: 5:51 p.m.
Nick tells us there is a large police presence on the scene. The protester's liaison to the National Lawyers Guild is now saying that close to 100 people were arrested today.

Update: 9:28 p.m.
DCPI told us that there have been about 80 arrests.

Update: 12:01 a.m.
Bruner just issued a retraction to members of the media explaining that, despite what he said earlier, the march Saturday was never headed to the United Nations building.

"When we reached out to the NYPD's Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information we were told that the NYPD does not use tear gas and does not have it." Splitting hairs.  Tear gas, pepper spray, mace...all nasty stuff.

The Fascist trained NYPD has now reverted to cemical warfare against #occupywallstreet. And as usual they try to hide it by calling it pepper spray.

People here in NYC cannot figure out what they are actually protesting.  This is what we have witnessed: a crew of shiftless brats, begging for donations for pizza and donuts on their webpage, sharing spotty video claiming police brutality, thinking they can take over a little privately owned park for their peculiar side show antics.  If you actually saw it as I do daily, you people would be a bit frightened.  And let's just keep spending tons of the city's money on them.

Most of the protesters are not even from NY.

Also if you scan the signs and the livestream, this is not just young people and Anonymous trying to push an idealistic agenda. Who is represented there?  The Socialist Workers Party, the Worker's World Party, anarchists, etc using the kids for their own agendas.

The Tea Party is what's frightening.

ton of city money? what do you know about city money? $12 tolls, fines, taxes, more taxes, unaffordable rents, bloombergs and cops, cops, "heros", cops, 9/11 memorials for $500 MILLION DOLLARS...do us a favor get out of New York...we don't need you here blaming young protestors for doing something about the conditions on wall street. GET The F out of new York and buy yourself a nice expensive condo in a gated community in a place where you can order pizza out of your own TV invested home, and get donuts at your corporate park dunkin donuts church.

Shiftless moron.

LK - Real Nyers wouldn't complain about 12 tolls, fines taxes. rents and then tell someone to move to the burbs.  LK, you're a moron and NY can't stand you.  You don't sound like you even know anything about NY.  BTW, the protesters get their free food from...  Dunkin Donuts.

My Pledge of Allegiance to the Constitutional Republic of the United States of America

I hereby openly and before God and the Kleptocracy endorse and stand ready to support the "Occupy Wall Street" event:

https://occupywallst.org

I also hereby reverse my previous position and guidance, and reinstate my support for the "Stop the Machine" event:

http://october2011.org

I recognize that in so doing I am allying myself with people who do not share all of my political beliefs, that I will be standing side-by-side in protest with those of the Far Left - including Communists, Socialists and Anarchists - as well as those of the Far Right - including Libertarians, Tea Partyists and Ron Paulists - and that their race, ethnicity and name for the Almighty may differ from mine.  But politics makes for strange bedfellows, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and all who join this protest agree that our Ruling Omnipotent Fascist Kleptocracy is the enemy of all Mankind.

I ask those more closely associated with these events to consider me at their disposal to support to the limits of my resources and abilities any and all actions - including non-violent civil disobedience - aimed at toppling the Kleptocracy, exposing the truth about 9/11, repealing the Patriot Act, reversing Citizens United v. FEC, ending our perpetual wars for oil and profit, retrieving the trillions of dollars stolen from or made burden of the taxpayers, and restoring Jeffersonian Democracy and the Constitutional Republic of the United States of America.

Lastly, I recognize that making this pledge public may have ramifications including and not limited to being placed on no-fly or other surveillance lists, and for that I say Big Brother be damned:  I do this for my grandchildren, in hopes they can grow up as free citizens rather than indentured slaves.

As much as a certain segment of society chooses to combat what they perceive to  be the gaming of society by entrenched power interests perhaps we ought to ask the uncomfortable question- does anyone then really care anymore? And if they did, how is it that the movement that started off with 5000 members last weekend has dwindled to less than 200 come this weekend? After all the concerns of the ‘occupy wall street’ group are legitimate ones with deep consequences.

Police have been using pepper spray in America for, what, 25 years now?

guest

There have been several false reports coming from the protesters that have been repeated without challenge.  This should not have been run without verification.  There was a prior article where a protester claimed that one organizer was "beaten down by the police". I saw the video of the event, no such thing occurred.

The police have bent over backwards to allow them to trespass on private property for a week(without the owner's permission).

LK

Your insane. The police have bent over backwards?? for a peaceful protest, where goon cops arrest harmless peaceful women. If violence its one thing. Most cops are on steroids and there egos are pulsating from the "hero" worship lathered on them by the media and government. They are abusive, over reacting, pussies period. There is no reason for the police to react this way. People want there voice heard on wall street abuse. We pay taxes, tolls, donations, tolls, taxes, tickets, bills for these streets to protest on when we like and where we like..peacefully. I would love to see you bend a cop over backwards...I'm sure they would like to do you to...pig on pig

How can it be verified if the MSM is not reporting it?  I've seen the videos and will take the word of protesters over that of Fox, CNN or MSNBC.

Getting reliable and easily confirmed reports in a chaotic situation is sometimes hard. As you may have not noticed, Occupy Wall Street clearly issued a retraction on the tear gas claim and they were upfront about saying they had been unable to confirm it earlier on. Also, they recently posted a photo of a young man with a bloody eye in zip tie cuffs so police beat-downs have definitely happened, unless the kid punched himself in the face and then fell into some cuffs and the guy escorting him was a stripper and not a real cop.

Furthermore, they have not been trespassing as the park is private property and the owner didn't complain. What evidence do you have to back your claims up?

guest
guest

Psst...

"Nick also tells us that Brookfield Properties, which owns Zuccotti, posted notice that the protesters have to leave by Monday, but protest lawyers say that is not binding."

So the owner of the property wants them out(as I said) but that's not binding?  Oh, ok, let me come over and camp on your front lawn.

hu
hu

Fuck the owner and fuck you too buddy.

guest

No, they put the information out there with no evidence to support it first, knowing it would inflame people, and that more people would hear it then would hear the retraction later.  Why put it out there if you can't confirm it?  To inflame.

I was talking about a specific instance of a woman quoted by the Village Voice saying that Justin was "beaten down", which was certainly not true.  You say that "they" posted a photo with a man with a bloody eye in cuffs so "police beat downs have definitely happened".  Read back what you wrote-that is not evidence of a police beating-do you know how the kid hurt his eye? Did you see it happen?  Did you see the cop beat the kid?  Do you have video of the cop beating the kid?  Did you see whether the kid attacked the officer?  All these would be good questions to ask before you make bald statements like that.

I know the numbers of protesters are continually inflated as well because I am nearby.  You are telling people to spam police lines-that is against the law and can result in people dying.

"Furthermore, they have not been trespassing as the park is private property and the owner didn't complain". Again I say, read what you yourself wrote.  IT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY.  They don't have a right to sleep on private property.  "The owner didn't complain"?  How do you know that?  I've spoken to the owner, have you?  The owner wants them out.  Guess what?  It's the owner's property, and they are rightfully concerned about people getting hurt on their property.  The owners are in fact disturbed with the police for not acting.
