An NYPD recruit named Sherman Adams died last night after a training run with his police academy classmates along the East River. At around 5:40 p.m., after a day of exercises up and down between East Houston and 14th streets, Adams, who was from Coney Island, collapsed. He was rushed to Beth Israel, where he was pronounced dead. He leaves behind a five-year-old daughter.

Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly went to the hospital last night to meet with Adams's family. Bloomberg made this statement:

"Sherman made the decision to dedicate his life to protecting New Yorkers, serving as a correction officer for four years until he got the call to join the NYPD. Commissioner Kelly and I met with his mother tonight at Beth Israel Hospital, where we offered our deepest condolences and the thanks of an entire city grateful for his willingness to serve and help keep us all safe. My thoughts and prayers will be with all of Sherman's family and friends."

The cause of death hasn't yet been determined by the medical examiner.
