What It Was Like Inside the Washington Monument During Last Month's Earthquake

This video recently released by the National Park Service shows what it was like inside the Washington Monument during the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Virginia, sending vibrations up the Northeast coast, last month. It is unexpectedly scary!

The monument is still closed at this time. According to the Washington Post, the elevator system was damaged in the quake and will only go to the 250-foot level of the 555-foot-high monument. A mountaineering and rope-rigging ranger has been brought in to help engineers "in rappelling down the sides of the monument" for closer inspections, which will begin tomorrow morning, to determine the extent of the damage and how much repairs will cost (the inspection has already cost $200,000).

An earthquake is definitely something to share at show-and-tell the next day, but rappelling down the sides of the monument, now, that would be a next-level field trip.
